Deputy undersecretary at Health Ministry resigns

24 December 2013 /TODAYSZAMAN.COM, İSTANBUL
Health Ministry Deputy Undersecretary Muhammed Mısır has reportedly quit his post due to allegations of bribery.

A lawyer for the official said in a written statement that Mısır has been accused of taking bribes according to reports in news media outlets. The lawyer said Mısır's reputation has been irrevocably damaged by the allegations of bribery, prompting the health official to leave his position at the ministry.

“No investigation into the allegations has been launched yet. Mısır wants to be acquitted of charges of bribery. He resigned from his post until he is cleared of any charges in the public eye," the lawyer said in the statement that they want prosecutors to do their jobs in a transparent way.

This resignation comes against the backdrop of major corruption investigation into alleged bribery and fraud linked with public tenders and money laundering, involving well-known businesspeople, high-level bureaucrats and sons of three ministers. While dozens of suspects, including sons of two ministers have been jailed pending trial -- over charges of corruption and fraud -- four ministers also face allegations of bribery and tender rigging. The ministers have so far refused to resign from their posts despite numerous calls to do so from opposition parties.
