His own worst enemy -- himself
With a despair disguised with defiance and anger, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is dragging himself, his party -- the Justice and Development Party (AKP) -- and Turkey, one erratic step after the other, into a deeper and deeper mess.

No way to investigate corruption allegations
Everything is happening right in front of our eyes. As soon as the corruption investigation became public, all of the police chiefs who had been investigating it were appointed to different posts. And this was followed by the reassignment of 100 police chiefs across the country.

Don't forget the Syrians
Sometimes it is hard not to become cynical. Today and tomorrow, millions of Europeans, Americans and other Christians around the world will go to church, celebrate Christmas and sing about “Peace on Earth.” Presidents, monarchs and religious leaders will speak about the problems facing their societies and express the hope that the future will bring some relief. I guess several will refer to the victims of violence and war in other places and pray for a quick and peaceful solution. In many parts of the world, these are the days of good intentions and well-meaning advices.

Terminating a Turkish company (2)
In the first article of this series, I gave a brief outline of the winding-up process for Turkish limited companies. I mentioned that Article 636 of the Turkish Commercial Code regulates the termination of limited companies.

Individual liberty and ownership
Last week, I argued in my column that after the global crisis, Islamic funds and an Islamic economic model became popular not only in Islamic countries like Malaysia but also among academic and business circles; this model is now being discussed and practiced in different fields and parts. I also added that I would continue with this subject.

Who is the winner?
A fierce war of words is under way between well-respected Turkish Islamic scholar Fethullah Gülen and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Gülen accuses the government of trying to cover up corruption while the prime minister accuses him of attempting to secretly take over the state apparatus.

Yearning for the Soviet Union
In 2005 Russian President Vladimir Putin famously described the collapse of the Soviet Union as "the greatest geopolitical catastrophe" of the 20th century.

Mixed-up holidays
Life in a multicultural household can sometimes be confusing, but more often than not in our home, it is just amusing. Last week, my son tried his best to convince me that he should skip a day of school this week. When I was in school, we referred to the rare occurrence of a parent-approved day away from the classroom as a "mental health day." My own son longs for such days and often tries to obtain one with a variety of excuses. His attempts to gain a coveted day away from school usually include a mix of creativity and originality, with a little cross-cultural emphasis added for good measure.
