An ordinary LEGO minifigure, mistakenly thought to be the extraordinary MasterBuilder, is recruited to join a quest to stop an evil LEGO tyrant from gluing the universe together.

The Buzz: Perhaps one lesson learned from Battleship (2012): audiences don't necessarily want classic board games and toys turned into overly serious action-adventure tales. So we were relieved when Warner Bros. announced the project as an animated movie to be co-directed by the guys from Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (2009). That said: Candyland really would make for a freaky Gothic horror story.

Certificate PG-13   -   Action | Biography | Drama | War

Metascore: 53/100 (33 reviews)
An unlikely World War II platoon are tasked to rescue art masterpieces from Nazi thieves and return them to their owners.

The Buzz: George Clooney's latest directorial effort has been called "this year's Argo" for its true-life political thrills and ensemble cast, and we also think it will play like a realer-world Avengers -- just replace superheroes with Oscar winners, nominees, etc. Savvy/ingenious casting should guarantee solid box-office performance on both sides of the Atlantic despite being pushed onto the 2014 calendar from its initial awards berth.

Certificate PG-13   -   Action | Comedy | Fantasy | Horror | Mystery

Rose Hathaway is a Dhampir, half human/vampire, guardians of the Moroi, peaceful, mortal vampires living discretely within our world. Her legacy is to protect the Moroi from bloodthirsty, immortal Vampires, the Strigoi. This is her story.

The Buzz: Mark Waters hasn't had the best luck since Mean Girls, but the director's underrated take on The Spiderwick Chronicles proved he can handle the fantasy genre. Here, he partners with his brother, Heathers (1988) screenwriter Daniel Waters, to mount the first installment of a hopeful franchise based on Richelle Mead's 6-volume series of best-selling novels that sound a bit like Twilight meets X-Men meets, well, Mean Girls. A potential advantage this contender has over its competition: two of the six books have been turned into graphic novels thus far.

Amid the Civil War in 17th-Century England, a group of deserters flee from battle through an overgrown field. Captured by an alchemist, the men are forced to help him search to find a hidden treasure that he believes is buried in the field.

The Buzz: In the U.S., Ben Wheatley is still a film-critic's director since his previous works -- Sightseers, Kill List and Down Terrace -- have faired quite well on the festival circuit but barely made a dent in theaters (though we hope and imagine his at-home audience has grown). His latest, an experimental period piece, has earned some of his strongest reviews to date and the backing of one of our favorite studios, Drafthouse Films.

Certificate R   -   Comedy

Metascore: 29/100 (10 reviews)
A crime novelist whose research on Victorian serial killers has turned him into a paranoid wreck must confront his worst fears when a film executive takes a sudden interest in his movie script.

The Buzz: We haven't seen writer-director Crispian Mill's feature film debut, but plenty of reviewers have questioned whether a horror comedy with Victorian tones will resonate with U.S. audiences, to which I say: Since people stuck with "Downton Abbey" through its most recent season, genre audiences might just take to this Simon Pegg-starring curio.

Certificate R   -   Comedy | Drama

Metascore: 55/100 (9 reviews)
A tragedy presents Laurel with the chance to reinvent herself as her idolized twin sister, Audrey. As she eases into the life she has always wanted, she must decide between continuing the lie or revealing herself as the perfect fraud.

The Buzz: Definitely interested in what's next for writer-director Jenee LaMarque since critics have come out in support of her narrative, which moves the often-creepy take on identical twins into romantic comedy territory, and supplies yet another left-of-center role for Zoe Kazan, one of the more underrated actresses around.
