Jimmy Fallon's final 'Late Night' scores big ratings: 'I'm not gonna cry'

Another late-night record this week for NBC: Jimmy Fallon’s final show as host of Late Night scored a series-high rating.

Following NBC’s coverage of the Sochi Olympics Opening Ceremony (those numbers here), Fallon’s show had a 4.8 rating in the metered-market households, the best performance ever of the show using this data-set. The prior record was set on Thursday following the final telecast of The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Given more than 30 million viewers tuned in for the Opening Ceremony, however, anything except a record for Fallon might have been seen as a disappointment.

Olympics Opening Ceremony ratings: Sochi below Vancouver

Add this to the list of potential #SochiProblems: Lower ratings.

Friday’s Opening Ceremony of the Xxii Olympic Winter Games on NBC came in below 2010′s Vancouver launch. The ceremony hosted by Today’s Matt Lauer and Meredith Vieira delivered a 18.5 overnight household rating, down 8 percent from four years ago. The numbers follow Thursday’s “bonus” night of game coverage likewise slipping below the first night of competition coverage from Vancouver.

However: Friday’s tape-delayed coverage from Russia posted gains from the last non-live Opening Ceremony in 2006. In fact, it’s the most-watched Opening Ceremony for a non-live Winter Games since the 1994 Lillehammer Games. »

'The Walking Dead': Lauren Cohan on the 'goriest' episodes yet

So, you just watched your father have his head cut off. Your boyfriend recently was about one more cough away from death himself, and who knows where the hell he is now. Your home has been totaled by a tank and a herd of flesh-eating zombies. And now — somehow, someway — you have to keep yourself alive. That’s where things stand for Maggie Greene when The Walking Dead returns Sunday night for the last eight episodes of season 4. We spoke with Lauren Cohan (who also will be guest-starring soon on Archer) to get some insight into what’s going on »

'Outlander' scoop: Author Diana Gabaldon to cameo

Fans of the hugely popular Outlander book series should keep their eyes peeled for author Diana Gabaldon when the much-anticipated adaptation bows on Starz later this year: She’ll make a cameo!

The Arizona-based author was in Scotland last week filming the episode. She wrote at length about her appearance on her Facebook page. “Now, originally, they’d asked if I’d like to be an extra, and I said sure, that might be fun, and the fans could play ‘Where’s Waldo?’ when the show is released. But some weeks later, they … the production team … emailed me to say »

7 February 2014 5:07 PM, PST

CBS is giving Happy Endings creator David Caspe his second pilot order of the season: The network has issued a thumbs-up to Cuz-Bros, a comedy that he created with fellow Happy producer Erik Sommers. The multi-camera pilot, which will be written and executive produced by the pair, chronicles the exploits of a successful lady killer whose perfect life is thrown out of whack when his “mess of a cousin” moves in with him.

Last month, NBC ordered a pilot for Caspe’s Marry Me, a romantic comedy that stars Childrens Hospital’s Ken Marino and Happy star Casey Wilson. »

The X Factor has been crossed off Fox’s schedule.

The network is canceling the singing-competition series after three seasons of declining ratings.

The news comes the same day judge and executive producer Simon Cowell announced he would return to the UK version of the show.

Cowell, Fox entertainment chairman Kevin Reilly and FremantleMedia North America president of entertainment Trish Kinane released statements pinning the decision on Cowell deciding to return to the UK series. But Fox had an option to renew X Factor and debated for months whether to bring it back. For awhile, Fox considered renewing the series »

'Parks and Recreation': Wilco's Jeff Tweedy to guest -- Exclusive

7 February 2014 11:30 AM, PST

A regionally famous rock band may reunite in Pawnee, and its singer will be portrayed by… Jeff Tweedy.

The Wilco frontman has filmed a guest spot in an upcoming episode of Parks and Recreation that has a theme of, shall we say, harmony. “He plays the former lead singer of a band called ‘Land Ho!’ — complete with exclamation point; Tweedy’s pitch — that was very popular in Indiana a while back,” Parks executive producer Michael Schur tells EW. “Leslie (Amy Poehler) and Andy (Chris Pratt) are trying to convince him to reunite for the big Unity Concert they are organizing »

'Game of Thrones' scoop: See who's becoming a series regular

7 February 2014 9:00 AM, PST

A certain Game of Thrones actor is getting boosted to series-regular status.

Nathalie Emmanuel, who played Daenerys Targaryen’s wary and clever translator Missandei last season, will be bumped to a series regular assuming the fantasy hit gets a fifth season (which seems like a pretty safe bet).

For the upcoming fourth season, her character is described as “a former slave with a gift for languages who becomes Daenerys’ confidant and trusted adviser.” Emmanuel has also landed a role in the upcoming Fast & Furious 7.

The promotion follows a similar recent boost for another actor playing a character from Dany’s circle — Michiel Huisman, »

NBC's Winter Olympics coverage tops Thursday, yet viewership dips from 2010

7 February 2014 8:59 AM, PST

NBC’s first night of Winter Olympics coverage easily dominated Thursday night in the ratings, yet was down from the start of the network’s coverage in 2010.

Marking the first time NBC’s prime-time event coverage has started before the Opening Ceremony, the Sochi gameplay averaged 19.6 million viewers and a 5.8 rating among adults 18-49 — down 25 percent among total viewers from the first night of Vancouver competition in 2010. The network’s prime-time coverage included figure skating, snowboarding and women’s skiing Friday night.

Competitors were not as injured as much as you might expect by NBC’s ratings surge. Though most »

InsideTV Podcast: How long is a spoiler a spoiler?

7 February 2014 8:33 AM, PST

Spoiler Alert! Who shot J.R? It was his sister-in-law and mistress Kristin Shepard. That may sound a bit ridiculous to offer a spoiler alert for something that aired 34 years ago, but consider that someone once sent an angry letter to EW after I offhandedly mentioned the identity of Rosebud from 1941’s Citizen Kane, a “mistake” I do not plan to make again here. But all of this begs the question: When does a spoiler cease to be a spoiler? And whose responsibility is it to prevent the dissemination of information after it has already been made public: the person that has already watched it, »

'Walking Dead' pranks NYC with zombie attacks

6 February 2014 2:21 PM, PST

As if suffering through a polar vortex wasn’t bad enough, now New York City residents are enduring zombie attacks.

AMC’s The Walking Dead staged a prank Friday in Union Square that put the undead under a sewer grate to scare unsuspecting pedestrians (video below). According to AMC, all the victims were indeed regular people, not actors.

The stunt is to promote the return of the hit drama series Sunday night and marks the latest example of Hollywood using viral prank marketing, particularly for horror projects. For the remake of Carrie in October, marketers staged a telekinesis stunt in »

About that 'Biggest Loser' winner's weight loss....

6 February 2014 1:55 PM, PST

The Biggest Loser’s big winner has been making headlines since the finale on Tuesday night. Unfortunately, it’s not all been positive. For those who haven’t been following,  fan favorite Rachel Frederickson, 24, a voice-over artist from L.A., beat out the competition by dropping a whopping 155 pounds and going from 260lbs to 105. But many have questioned if maybe Frederickson didn’t go too far.

Today on Sirius Xm, I had the opportunity to talk to EW’s TV editors, Kristen Baldwin and Meeta Agrawal, about Frederickson’s shocking appearance, the math (!) involved in winning the competition, and about »
