Why 'Transparent' Creator Jill Soloway Feels the Amazon Pilot Process is 'Revolutionary'

54 minutes ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Before she made her directorial debut with "Afternoon Delight," which starred Kathryn Hahn, Juno Temple and Josh Radnor and premiered at Sundance last year, Jill Soloway worked in television as a writer and producer on series like "United States of Tara" (for which she was showrunner) and "Six Feet Under" (which netted her three Emmy nominations). Now she's back working on the small screen, albeit in a new form -- she's the creator of "Transparent," one of 10 new original series pilots Amazon premiered on February 6th. A half-hour comedy, "Transparent" is the story of a Los Angeles family -- the divorced parents played by Jeffrey Tambor and Judith Light, with Jay DuplassGaby Hoffmann and Amy Landecker as their grown children. Warm but sharp-edged in its dialogue, "Transparent" is easily the best of the new pilots -- you can watch it online here. Indiewire caught up with Soloway by phone »

Congrats to 'Black Hat,' January's Project of the Month!

59 minutes ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Congratulations to "Black Hat" writer-director Robbie Bryan! The project received the most votes to win January's Project of the Month. The prize is a consultation from our Project of the Month partner, Tribeca Film Institute. Here's a look at the film's pitch: "Dandi Chiapetta" is an alternative teen who is into everything anime and the band Slipknot. Bullied for her love of this art form, she still has a dream. To get to a convention halfway across the country where her favorite anime Director, Shinichiro Watanabe, is going to turn one amateur manga comic into an anime. When all else fails, she "kidnaps" her estranged grandfather, in a nursing home, and races to get to the convention in time. Judging by our Fb page, which has over 228,000 "likes" already, worldwide, this film and subject matter has huge potential. For more information on this project, visit its Project of the Day page. »

Watch: The Red Band Trailer for Arnold Schwarzenegger's 'Sabotage' Earns Its Red and Then Some

1 hour ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Arnold Schwarzenegger continues his comeback with his latest action pic, "Sabotage." "Sabotage" is written by Skip Woods and David Ayer ("Training Day," "End of Watch"), and directed by the latter. Sam Worthington and Terrence Howard hold supporting roles as Schwarzenegger leads a team of highly skilled DEA agents who slowly get picked off, one by one, after the $10 million dollar fortune they acquired in a drug bust goes missing. The red band trailer earns it's red and then some. There's enough violence to satisfy even the most shameless action geek, especially in one satisfying clip of a guy in a trailer stuck on the train tracks as the train speeds towards him. Schwarzenegger delivers his one liners with class and eloquence as he tears through the cartel to find out where his wife is, and who's responsible for killing his men. "Sabotage" is being distributed by Open Road and Qed International. »

Berlin Review: '71' Starring Jack O’Connell An Outstanding, Bloody, Meditation On The Personal Cost Of Conflict

1 hour ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

While the odds of seeing two truly extraordinary, brutal but brilliant British films in as many weeks are fairly long, the chances of both films starring the same relative unknown, in two similarly impressive yet fundamentally different performances, must be exponentially smaller. But we should buy a lottery ticket, because in the wake of David Mackenzie’s tremendous “Starred Up” (review here), a new film from debut feature director Yann Demange has had its world premiere here at the Berlin Film Festival. And it also places at its moral, physical and psychological center a role for Jack O’Connell, the rising star who knocked us sideways in the former film, and did it all over again here. But “‘71” is more than just a performance showcase, delivering a gripping, at times almost unbearably tense, incredibly involving anti-war statement, made the stronger for being set against the less cinematically familiar backdrop of Belfast, »

Watch: 4 Fiery And Brawny Clips From 'Pompeii' Starring Kit Harington & Emily Browning

1 hour ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

'Tis the season for shirtless bronzed dudes running and yelling, in olden times, as CGI effects fill the screen. Last month, Kellan Lutz beefed up "The Legend Of Hercules," next month Eva Green and Sullivan Stapleton will shout a lot in "300: Rise Of An Empire" and this month, cinematic auteur Paul W.S. Anderson brings us the volcanic "Pompeii." Led by "Game Of Thrones" star Kit Harington and Emily Browning, the movie is set against the backdrop an erupting volcano, where one man not only has to rescue the love of his life, but also his best friend. And as you'll see in the clips below, it's about what you'd expect from Anderson: a kinda generic, quasi-"Gladiator" vibe with actors saying their lines with due gravitas and whatnot. Shrug. By the end of March, we'll have had enough of chiseled people doing blandly heroic things. "Pompeii" arrives on February 28th. »

FX Developing Limited Series Based on John Scalzi's Sci-fi Novel 'Redshirts'

1 hour ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

FX has teamed up with producers Jon Shestack ("Dan in Real Life"), Ken Kwapis ("The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants") and Alexandra Beattie to bring "Redshirts," a comedic sci-fi novel published in 2012, to the small screen, Deadline reports. The futuristic "Redshirts," written by John Scalzi, follows a group of crew members aboard the Starship Intrepid who suddenly and mysteriously start dying. At first unsure of the cause of these deaths, the crew realize that their situation mirrors that of a certain 21st century science fiction television show. Essentially, their lives -- and deaths -- are following a TV plot. Kwapis is set to direct the premiere episode with Shestack and Beattie executive producing. Prior to "Redshirts," Kwapis and Beattie were working on the Showtime comedy "Happyish," put on hold following the death of Phillip Seymour Hoffman who was cast as the lead. FX has been investing in limited series lately -- its upcoming "Fargo, »

[Deadline] Ufc Fighter Ronda Rousey is continuing her steps into the acting world. With roles already in the upcoming "The Expendables 3" and "Fast & Furious 7," she's looking to make an impression in a couple more roles. Gary Oldman Reveals Studio-Planned Early Leak Of 'RoboCop' Set Photos

2 hours ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

The fever pitch of fan obsessiveness has reached a weird high these days. While it's one thing to see set photos, on some sites fans will post pictures of trailers and trucks simply involved in the production even when nothing is happening. And when an image does manage to be snapped (usually from far away, out of context, unfinished, from a horrible perspective) of an actor in costume for whatever superhero movie or franchise they're making, it will be scrutinized to death as if it were the final version of what's going on the big screen. But all press is good press, right? That seems to be thinking from the folks at Sony. Way back in the fall of 2012, the first images from the set of "RoboCop" appeared online, showing off the shiny new black suit and prompting many comments about the direction the remake was taking. And according to Gary Oldman, »

James McAvoy Says Jason Statham Delivered The "Best Line I've Ever Heard In A Film"

3 hours ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

For the grief we sometimes give Jason Statham, let's face it: he knows what his strengths are, he plays to them, and he delivers exactly what fans expect each time out. And he make look pretty easy what is often very hard. And while critics may not usually take kindly to his movies, there's one actor out there giving him due props: James McAvoy. Den Of Geek closed their recent interview with McAvoy—who has previously praised Statham calling him "the most physically impressive actor I've ever seen"—by asking him what his favorite movie by the action star was. And the answer is pretty great: Crank, because he got the line, "Does it look like I've got c*nt written on my head?" and that is the best line I've ever heard in a film. What's your favorite Statham movie and line of dialogue? Let us know below. »

SnagFilms Movie of the Week: Fall For 'Endless Love' Ahead of its Valentine's Day Remake

3 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

This coming Valentine's Day sees the release of "Endless Love," a remake of the 1981 Brooke Shields film, that's available to view for free on SnagFilms. The Franco Zeffirelli-directed 1981 "Endless Love," although a box office success, received six Razzie nominations (and funnily enough, an Oscar nomination for its title song by Lionel Richie). Whether the 2014 version, starring Alex Pettyfer, will follow in the same vein, well, we'll see. In the trailer for the remake, we are introduced to David and Jade, two drop-dead gorgeous lovers who embark on an impassioned relationship despite interferences from Jade's meddling parents. We are given intercut scenes of love-making, swimming pool footsie and daddy yelling -- all to a sexy cover of Robert Palmer's "Addicted to Love" by Florence + The Machine. Directed and written by Shana Feste ("Country Song"), "Endless Love" promises intrigue, really good beach bodies and steam--the perfect Valentine's Day flick. Before catching the new. »

Watch: First Trailer For 'Planes: Fire & Rescue' Tries To Heat Up Your Emotions

3 hours ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

So, the "Cars" spinoff is now its very own franchise. And if you're wondering who on Earth bothered to see "Planes," a lot of people did, with the modestly budgeted animated movie pulling in over $210 million worldwide. (It nearly cracked $100 million domestically alone.) So "Planes: Fire & Rescue" was inevitable, but that still doesn't explain the first trailer. You might think the target for "Planes: Fire & Rescue" would be kids, but maybe we're wrong. Instead, this spot offers up a soaring Mor FM radio song about flying high and feelings or something, in what plays like an elegy for the heroes that risk their lives every day fighting fires. But the thing is, this is an animated movie with characters named Dusty and Dipper, so there's a weird disconnect going on that's not helped by the fact this song is brutally awful. As for the plot, it basically finds former racer Dusty, »

Review: Tyler Labine & Lucy Punch Energize Otherwise Uninspired 'Someone Marry Barry'

4 hours ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

To be fair, the sorta-raunchy rom-com "Someone Marry Barry" is shamelessly and unapologetically up front about how much it owes and rips off from the Judd Apatow oeuvre. And we're not just talking about the four-bros-with-women-and-life-problems premise. Whether it's nodding to the speed dating sequence from "The 40 Year Old Virgin," or even the detail that the titular character lives off money he earned after falling into an open manhole (not unlike Seth Rogen's Ben from "Knocked Up" who received a settlement after his foot was run over by a mail truck), it's clear writer/director Rob Pearlstein—Oscar nominated for his 2004 short "Our Time Is Up"—has spent some time watching a very selective batch of movies. And as we saw last month with "That Awkward Moment," if you don't understand what makes Apatow's films work, the results can disastrous. And while "Someone Marry Barry" is missing some key ingredients, »

Gaspar Noé Says 'Gravity' Is "Incredibly Mind-f*cking"

4 hours ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

We're less than a month away from the Oscars, and yet "Gravity" is still the topic of much discussion. Granted, much of that chatter has been positive with the movie picking up continued buzz and awards in the race to Oscar night. Then there are folks like Louis C.K. who nitpick the physics of the movie and other minor details without seeing the big picture. And then there's "Irreversible" and "Enter The Void" director Gaspar Noé. The filmmaker recently interviewed artist Matthew Barney for Bomb about his upcoming movie "River Of Fundament," and the conversation briefly touched upon 3D, which of course, led to "Gravity." And Noé didn't waste a moment in urging Barney to check it out with some rather effusive praise:  The first two takes are twenty minutes each, but you’ve never seen such a visual roller coaster inside a movie theater. Those two opening takes are incredible, »

“The Misery of Some People:” Paolo Sorrentino on The Great Beauty

4 hours ago | Filmmaker Magazine - Blog | See recent Filmmaker Magazine news »

Since its premiere at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, Paolo Sorrentino’s The Great Beauty has enjoyed much critical and theatrical success — alongside the more unwanted La Dolce Vita comparisons and projected criticism of the Berlusconi era. In speaking with the filmmaker behind this alternately bombastic and meditative examination of a writer adrift in the eternal and ostentatious city, however, one senses that Sorrentino’s intentions were not nearly as biting as some have gathered. Yes, there is a Bishop more infatuated with food than God, a woman who strips for the love of the profession, a child who earns millions by having […] »

Which Amazon Pilots Are Worth Your Time? We Review and Rank the Site's Newest Would-Be Original Series

4 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Yesterday, Amazon Studios unveiled its second round of original pilots, among them its first two dramas and a pair of indie film-tinged comedies along with a more straightforward one. As with the first round of pilots (which yielded series orders for "Alpha House" and "Betas"), these episodes have been placed online for free, with Amazon collecting data and feedback from viewers to help determine which will get greenlit -- meaning that if you like something, speaking up about it could potentially help it get made. Some of the pilots I really enjoyed, and some not so much. This round was notably Los Angeles-centric, full of glassy houses perched up in the hills or along the water -- from a football player's over-the-top bachelor pad in "The Rebels" to the family home the father in "Transparent" wants to let go to the Bel Air mansion in which the group in "The After" holes up. »

"Hey I'm Elizabeth" "What's up?" "Nothing much, I'm actually just trying to meet some new friends." "I'll be your friend." Cue music. The trailer for "The Den", a horror film about a girl (Melanie Papalia) who witnesses a murder on a video chatting website and becomes hunted, opens a frightening window into a world that smashes the ideological view that all people are inherently good, and that everyone is safe behind their computer screens. "The web is a window into your life and the lives of others," is the text that comes up in between cuts of the trailer, grounding the audience in the reality that they can see, and be seen. In a world where #crime is a trending topic, how many people can you get to hashtag? Directed by Zachary Donohue, the film uses the webcam on the computer and found footage cinematography to further enclose the viewer »
