Casting Society Of America To Cease Internship Job Postings After Legal Questions Arise

Exclusive: The Casting Society of America has decided it will no longer allow postings for internships through its webpage and sent a note out to its membership announcing its change of policy. The move comes after a Deadline story that brought to light an unpaid internship posting by a casting office that seemed to fly in the face of federal labor laws, asking an intern to do heavy phone work, appointment scheduling, running errands, typing, and reading and breaking down script. The Csa policy change will apply to both paid and unpaid internship postings. L.A. Mayor Picks Lawyer Ken Ziffren As City’s New Film Czar

Exclusive: Los Angeles is about to get its second Film Czar. Mayor Eric Garcetti has decided on Ken Ziffren for the job he created last fall and the powerhouse entertainment attorney has accepted the gig, I’ve learned.  Ziffren will step into the position vacated by the death of the city’s first Film Czar Tom Sherak. The former AMPAS president and studio exec passed away from cancer on January 28. A formal announcement of Ziffren’s appointment to head the Entertainment Industry and Production office is expected to come from the Mayor’s office early next week, sources tell me. Related: R.I.P. NBC Explains Decision To Cut Ioc President’s Anti-Discrimination Remarks From Olympics Opener

Anti-discrimination remarks from Ioc President Thomas Bach that were mysteriously cut out of NBC’s telecast during the Sochi Olympics‘ opener were pre-empted for time in the U.S., the network said today. Global viewers heard the speech in its entirety in which Bach touched on Russia’s controversial anti-gay policies: “It is possible, even as competitors, to live together under one roof in harmony, with tolerance and without any form of discrimination for whatever reason,” he said. NBC issued a statement, but not an apology, for the move. “The Ioc’s President was edited for time, as were other speeches, but his message got across very clearly to viewers,” an NBC spokesperson told Deadline. Update: Sochi Olympics Opening Ceremony Ratings Dip From Vancouver 2010 But Surge From Torino 2006

8 February 2014 12:05 PM, PST

First Take: Looks like it’s going to be a ratings Silver medal for NBCs coverage last night of the 2014 Olympics Winter Games in Sochi, Russia. Hosted for NBC by Today’s Matt Lauer and his former morning partner Meredith Vieira, the network’s primetime tape-delayed coverage of the Xxii Olympic Winter Games Opening Ceremony garnered a 18.5/30 in metered-market results.  That’s down 8% from the 20.0/33 overnight rating that the live 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony drew on February 12 that year. However, last night’s result is an 26% rise from the 14.7/23 overnight that the last tape-delayed Winter Games Opening Ceremony from Torino got in 2006. Still, on a night of almost all repeats on every other network but Fox, the Opening Ceremony guarantees NBC a Gold medal in terms of ratings and viewership for Friday. Check out the Top 10 markets for last night’s Opening Ceremony below (nice one Minneapolis). Related: Winter »

4:30 Pm Et: It’s the Opening Ceremonies of the Sochi Olympics. Which, yes, happened hours ago and are only now being shown on tape delay by NBC. Friday night marks the opening ceremonies of the Xxii Olympic Winter Games, and coverage will begin with a clip narrated by Emmy-winning actor Peter Dinklage. Dinklage, 44, plays Tyrion Lannister on the hit HBO series Game of Thrones, where they also know something about winter. “It almost seems like an oversight, that this nation, that bears so much of winter’s burden, has never before hosted the Winter Games,” Dinklage says. Sounds good. “More than ever before, snow has become the realm of the young,” he adds. What? 4:38 Pm: Bob Costas runs through laundry list of stories surrounding the Games: terrorism threats, human rights issues, staggering sums spent, whether Sochi should have been granted the Games in the first place. ‘Glee’s Name In Jeopardy In the UK After Court Ruling

7 February 2014 7:41 PM, PST

Fox and its 20th Century Fox TV studio have suffered a setback in its trademark legal dispute with the owner of a small chain of independent stand-up comedy clubs in the UK. Mark Tughan, whose Comic Enterprises owns four Glee Clubs, registered the trademark in 1999, and in 2011 he filed a lawsuit against Fox over musical dramedy Glee, claiming the name of the show infringes on his trademark, creating a confusion that his venues are somehow associated with the series. Earlier today, a British judge ruled in Tughan’s favor on the infringement and “tarnishment” issues while rejecting his claim of harm being caused to him by the Glee series, which airs in the UK on Sky Broadcasting, partly owned by Fox. While handing a victory to Tughan, the judge expressed an opinion rather than ordering actions such as an injunction banning the series from airing in the UK, something Tughan had sought. »

Honorable mentions: This Olympics comes with an asterisk. Sochi Olympics Opening Ceremony – sponsored by Audi. “Come on, baby, stay. Utah Court Agrees To Weigh Aereo Case

7 February 2014 3:56 PM, PST

More billable hours for broadcasters’ and Aereo’s lawyers. The U.S. District Court will hear broadcasters’ motion for a preliminary injunction against the streaming service on Tuesday – even as the U.S. Supreme Court plans to look at the copyright infringement allegations against Aereo. If the Utah court sides with broadcasters then its decision would apply to six states that make up the 10th Circuit. Fox, one of the plaintiffs, says that it is “pleased” by the decision, and “hopeful” that the court will bar Aereo from serving the region before the high court considers the arguments. The plaintiffs have ”always maintained that Aereo is operating illegally and has no right to retransmit our copyrighted material.” Aereo declined to comment, but has countered that it merely leases to consumers the antennas and technologies they already can use at home to watch over-the-air TV for free. Broadcasters filed the suit in Utah in October. »
