Ansel Elgort Describes the Impact ‘Fault in Our Stars’ Had on His Career: ‘I Got Lucky’

16 August 2016 8:30 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

The 2013 remake of “Carrie” marked a number of firsts for Ansel Elgort. It was his movie debut, after having survived seven auditions to play Chloë Grace Moretz’s unlucky prom date. “They said they wanted someone like Alex Pettyfer for the role,” he says. “Somehow I ended up getting it.”

Mark Williams & Sara Hirakawa for Variety

The Toronto shoot was the first time Elgort lived away from home, an experience that resembled college. “They gave me a little apartment. I got to go grocery shopping myself.” And he learned the secret language of a movie set. “People talking about craft, I thought they were talking about mac and cheese,” he says. “I didn’t know any of the terms.”

Now 22, Elgort could graduate with a diploma in movie stardom. In the last three years, he has appeared in a studio franchise (“Divergent”) and the drama “Men, Women & Children,” directed by Jason Reitman. »

‘The Girlfriend Experience’: Why Riley Keough Sizzles (Emmy Video)

You know it when you see it. A star on the rise.

Casting “Magic Mike,” Steven Soderbergh saw an audition tape for then-22-year-old model-actress Riley Keough—whose genetic blessings from grandfather Elvis Presley and mother Lisa Marie are self evident—and hired her sight unseen for a small role as stripper Nora, where she learned all about “underwear and spray tans,” she told me in our video interview. She first met Soderbergh at a “Magic Mike” staff dinner with her co-stars Channing Tatum, Matthew McConaughey and her romantic interest Alex Pettyfer, to whom she was briefly engaged.

Five years later, “The Girlfriend Experience” producer Soderbergh cast Keough to carry the 13-part Starz half-hour series “The Girlfriend Experience,” now adapted from his 2009 film by indie writer-directors, Amy Seimetz (“Sun Don’t Shine”) and Lodge Kerrigan (“Claire Dolan”). Reviews and Emmy buzz are strong.

Elvis & Nixon review

Kevin Spacey is Nixon and Michael Shannon is Elvis in this slightly disjointed but often very fun drama...

If you were to draw up a list of likely actors to play Elvis, I’d wager that Michael Shannon wouldn’t come particularly high up in the rankings. His acting chops are well proven, but he comes with an enigmatic energy which is so quintessentially Shannon that it would be hard for the viewer to shake that and truly believe they’re watching The King.

This was my worry going into Elvis & Nixon, and this is still how I feel after Elvis & Nixon. But that isn’t to say that there weren’t moments of fun in between. True, I never suspended my disbelief long enough to forget that I was watching General Zod as Elvis - with all the wiry Shannon eccentricities and not much of  the “uh, »

Elvis & Nixon review: Not a sequel to Frost/Nixon, but the bizarre ‘true’ tale of when two icons met. Elvis & Nixon review

Richard Nixon and Elvis Presley were quite the characters. Both over-the-top but highly respected in their own way they have become quite the staple of mockery and imitation over the years. It wouldn’t be too far out there to suggest that most people these days are exposed to a recreation of the individual before they learn about the historical figure. Whether it be Nixon’s floating severed head in Futurama or Jack White’s bizarrely hilarious turn in Walk Hard: A Dewey Cox Story. They’ve been conscripted into bizarre timelines where Elvis has fought an evil Egyptian mummy, and where Nixon has overseen a country filled with people with mutant powers, and masked vigilantes being outlawed. So the fact these two figures actually met behind »

Movie Review – Elvis & Nixon (2016)

16 June 2016 5:40 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Elvis & Nixon, 2016.

Directed by Liza Johnson

Starring: Kevin Spacey, Michael Shannon, Alex Pettyfer, Johnny Knoxville, Colin Hanks and Evan Peters.

Synopsis:

A comedic what-if story spun out of a real life meeting between Elvis Presley and President Nixon in the White House in December 1970.

The King and the U.S. President have a heart-to-heart in the Oval Office before Christmas in 1970. That premise sounds extremely bizarre but sometimes reality is stranger than fiction!

Based on the real life meeting between Elvis Presley and President Nixon, the effectively titled Elvis & Nixon ponders what may have happened when the two power players exchanged words for about 40 minutes on 21 December. Although there is photographic evidence of the encounter – it is the most requested item from the National Archives – no one knows exactly what was discussed since this happened before the disgraced leader began his secret recordings. Taking inspiration from actual documents, memoirs and hearsay, director Liza Johnson and screenwriters Joey Sagal, Hanala Sagal and Cary Elwes have created their own amusing version of events.

The film kicks off with Elvis very much in the white jumpsuit, Las Vegas-performing stage of his career. Sporting impressive sideburns, jewellery and sunglasses, Michael Shannon takes on the persona of the hip swivelling rock ‘n’ roller. Seemingly agitated and frustrated, Elvis suddenly hops on a plane to Los Angeles to pick up long-time friend Jerry Schilling (played by Alex Pettyfer) and convinces him to travel to the capital to arrange a tête-à-tête with Nixon.

Elvis scribbles a letter (this actually exists) in which he describes his desire to be a ‘federal agent at large’. “Sir, I can and will be of any service that I can to help the country out,” he writes. “I would love to meet you.” The unusual request raises eyebrows at the White House but eventually Nixon’s right-hand men, Bud Krogh (Colin Hanks) and Dwight Chapin (Evan Peters), persuade the grumpy Commander-in-Chief (Kevin Spacey) of the PR benefits.

After a farcical exchange of each man’s protocols, the King and the President are finally introduced and delve into a surreal conversation covering the Vietnam War, Woodstock, the Beatles and American values.

While neither actor resembles his character – Shannon is too rugged and Spacey isn’t as gruff – the pair slowly lull you into believing their jolly role-playing game. The performances are light-hearted and endearing – helped by the period costumes – and the supporting cast follow suit.

Of course, the slight tone distracts from the fact that both Elvis and Nixon are happily chatting about their suspicions of ‘the other’, i.e. dislike of the hippie movement, protest groups and four famous lads from Liverpool. Elvis harps on about wanting to “restore some respect for the flag which was being lost.” At the age of 35, the King had become firmly ‘establishment’, a surprising twist of fate for a person who was previously criticised for being a symbol of youthful rebellion.

Elvis & Nixon is an entirely pleasant 86 minutes in the cinema – entertaining, humorous and well-made, albeit somewhat forgettable. Also it’s further proof that a female director can harness the energy of two top male thespians portraying macho men.

2016 Tribeca Film Festival: ‘Elvis & Nixon’ Interviews

28 April 2016 2:15 AM, PDT | Blogomatic3000 | See recent Blogomatic3000 news »

Until February 1971, President Richard Nixon had meetings in the Oval Office unrecorded, unable to be called upon by him and his staff as well as those that came after him. One of those such meetings included the December 21, 1970 meeting he had with the king, Elvis Presley.

In a bizarre twist of actual historic events, Elvis Presley wanted a meeting with Richard Nixon in the hopes of becoming a “Federal Agent at Large” and carrying an official Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs badge. His wife Priscilla wrote that “the narc badge represented some kind of ultimate power to him . . . With the federal narcotics badge, he could legally enter any country both wearing guns and carrying any drugs he wished.” Well don’t we wish the same!

The Jungle Book Wins Again at the Box Office with $60.8M

With just a few weeks left until Marvel's Captain America: Civil War kicks off the summer movie season, Disney's The Jungle Book put up big numbers in its debut last week, raking in $103.2 million. This weekend, the Disney adventure only went up against one new movie in wide release, Universal's The Huntsman: Winter's War, while a number of other movies like Pantelion's Compadres, Bleecker Street's Elvis & Nixon and Roadside Attractions' The Hologram For the King also debuted in limited release. None of these movies ended up standing a chance against The Jungle Book at the box office this weekend, which won again with an impressive $60.8 million.

The Jungle Book was being projected to drop a healthy 43% in its second frame in theaters, winning for the second week in a row with $59 million, but it ended up faring a bit better than those predictions. According to Box Office Mojo, The Jungle Book »

[Review] Elvis & Nixon

23 April 2016 2:42 PM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

It is the most requested image in the National Archives, likely because of the tantalizing possibility and cheerful incongruity it summons. Elvis ‘The King’ Presley and Richard ‘Tricky Dick’ Nixon, two of the more confounding and eccentric figures of their respective time, standing there in the middle of the Oval Office shaking hands and looking mutually magnanimous. What had they discussed? How did these two men—singled out and scrutinized in differing ways by a public fascinated by them—approach one another? No official record of what went on during that meeting exists, but Liza Johnson’s enticing conjectural account of it is the centerpiece of Elvis & Nixon, a fascinatingly weird little movie that both teases and satisfies our pop curiosity.

The strength of Elvis & Nixon is rooted in a playful imagination that strives to work plausibly within the confines of what we know about these two men while also »

Film Review: ‘Elvis & Nixon’ is a True Story That’s Fit for a King

23 April 2016 10:48 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – “When two great saints meet, it’s a humbling experience,” said Paul McCartney of John and Yoko. Well that also applies to “Elvis & Nixon.” Their meeting, albeit brief, has layers of meaning for our times – and their time – and the movie with the “E&N” title exposes that meaning with humor and grace.

Rating: 4.5/5.0

Elvis Presley, nicknamed the “King of Rock ‘n Roll,” had prodigious fame and an appetite to match. Richard Milhous Nixon, President of the United States by default because all of his opponents were either killed or marginalized by the Vietnam War, was a tic-filled paranoid with little regard for his constituency beyond power. They met because Elvis wanted an honorary title, and Nixon – through his aides – wanted legitimacy in the “youth vote.” In the realm of the film, they gave each other something, but not exactly what they expected. All the ambiguities and underlying symbols »

Elvis & Nixon Review

Credit: Steve Dietl / Amazon Studios & Bleecker Street

Likely you have seen the photo: Richard Nixon, President of the United States, shaking hands with Elvis Presley, the King of Rock N’ Roll in full Las Vegas costume. It looks like a joke, one staged with impersonators, but the photo is real and, as the film tells us, the most requested photo of the National Archives.

This absurd, unlikely meeting is the basis of Elvis & Nixon a hilarious satire starring Kevin Spacey as Nixon and Michael Shannon as Elvis. The film, directed by Liza Johnson with a script by Joey Sagal, Hanala Sagal and Cary Elwes, is sly, clever and funny, with a little thoughtful reflection on the insular nature of great fame or power, and human relationships.

In 1970, Elvis Presley (Shannon) unexpectedly shows up at the White House gate, accompanied by friend Jerry Schilling (Alex Pettyfer), to request a meeting with »
