Stefon and Amy Poehler say goodbye to Seth Meyers on 'SNL'

This weekend's "Saturday Night Live" wasn't special just because it was the third time Melissa McCarthy hosted, it was also the last time Seth Meyers will ever "officially" anchor the Weekend Update desk.  Meyers had an impressive eight-year run that stands alongside the classic runs of Chevy Chase and Jane Curtin, Dennis Miller, Norm Macdonald, Jimmy Fallon and Tina Fey and Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.   Meyers will be taking over "Late Night" from Jimmy Fallon (who moves on to host "The Tonight Show") and on his final show some of the more memorable characters during Meyers run stopped by.  Are you ready for »

'Frozen' takes top honors at Annie Awards

Rife as they are with studio politics, the Annie Awards can sometimes perversely turn against frontrunners in the animated Oscar race, but if you were looking for any such shake-ups this year, you were out of luck. Disney's all-but-certain Oscar winner "Frozen" was the night's big winner, taking five awards for Best Animated Feature, Direction, Music, Production Design and Voice Acting for Josh Gad's irrepressible summer-loving snowman. But while the blockbuster fairytale was clearly a favorite, it wasn't a sweeper, as a number of other films got a piece of the pie. It's particularly sweet to see Hayao Miyazaki's allegedly final »

Emmanuel Lubezki wins Asc Award for 'Gravity'

Well, if you didn't already think the cinematography Oscar race was a done deal, it certainly is now: season-long favorite Emmanuel Lubezki has taken the Asc Award for "Gravity." Of all the cinematography precursors on the circuit, the Asc is the most resistant to 3D and CGI-enhanced imagery: recent Oscar winners in the category like "Avatar," "Hugo" and "Life of Pi" all failed to win here, so it wouldn't have been a surprise to see the voters plump for the more old-school work of "Inside Llewyn Davis" or even "The Grandmaster." The fact that they, too, joined the "Gravity" express underlines that this »

Recap: 'Saturday Night Live' – Melissa McCarthy And Imagine Dragons

Normally, I’d kick things off by saying how excited I am by the prospect of Melissa McCarthy hosting for the third time in three seasons of “Saturday Night Live.” She’s been a fantastic host in each of her previous two attempts, and already at the point where having her as host every year (if she wants to do it) seems like a desirable option. But tonight, it’s all about the end of the Seth Meyers Era on “SNL”. It might seem odd to say goodbye to someone who will actually be on NBC more often per week than now once he »

Review: 'Girls' - 'Only Child'

A review of tonight's "Girls" coming up just as soon as I've locked eyes with Michiko Kakutani... This has been a very funny season of "Girls" so far, but in some ways it's actually been darker than the more dramatic second season. Though Hannah and Adam are doing well as a couple, for the most part the four title characters are in some lousy places. Jessa got kicked out of rehab, and the universe is consistently calling her on her crap. Marnie got dumped by Charlie, is publicly humiliated because of her YouTube video, and walked away from her job at »

Anderson, but Sony wants to give you a glimpse of things to come with a quick video tease. This Week in Superhero Movies and TV: 'Man of Steel' meets Lex Luthor

Lex Luthor has come out of hiding. Remember when Bradley Cooper was rumored to be making a cameo as Luthor in "Man of Steel"? Or, later, that the bald business mogul would be played by Joaquin Phoenix, Bryan Cranston or Mark Strong? We were all wrong. Also in this exciting issue of This Week in Superheroes: "Ant-Man," "NInja Turtles," and not one, not two, but three "X-Men"-related movies.  "Man of Steel 2" "The Social Network's" Jesse Eisenberg has been revealed to be playing Superman's arch-nemesis Lex Luthor in the sequel.  It's the most surprising comic book movie casting coup since Gal Gadot was announced »

Academy issues a statement about Best Original Song executive decision

The Academy has released a statement concerning the decision to rescind the Best Original Song Oscar nomination for "Alone Yet Not Alone." Here it is in full... "The Board of Governors’ decision to rescind the Original Song nomination for 'Alone Yet Not Alone,' music by Bruce Broughton, was made thoughtfully and after careful consideration. The Academy takes very seriously anything that undermines the integrity of the Oscars voting process. The Board regretfully concluded that Mr. Broughton’s actions did precisely that. "The nominating process for Original Song is intended to be anonymous, with each eligible song listed only by title and the name of »

Thicke, Kendrick Lamar perform at pre-Super Bowl party

New York (AP) — Robin Thicke and Kendrick Lamar might be putting in their bids for the 2015 Super Bowl halftime show.   The artists were energetic when they performed Friday night at Espn's pre-Super Bowl bash at Pier 36 in New York City.   Thicke's performance included the upbeat jams "Give It 2 U," ''Magic" and "Blurred Lines," which he closed with and got the audience of a few thousand grooving.   He also slowed it down, playing the piano during "Dreamworld" and standing on top of it. Thicke even sang covers, including Michael Jackson's "Rock With You" and Marvin »

Box office: 'Ride Along' and 'Awkward Moment' battle for first on Friday

"Ride Along" continues to cruise at the box office, topping the chart for the third week in a row on Friday, but newcomer "That Awkward Moment" is threatening to overtake No. 1. "Ride," starring Ice Cube and Kevin Hart, earned an estimated $4 million Friday, while "That Awkward Moment" was nipping at its heels, earning $3.9 million. The two comedies will be neck-and-neck throughout the Super Bowl weekend, with "Ride" expected to come out on top with around $12 million, while "Awkward" should make it to $10.5 million or $11 million.  So far, "Ride" has grossed a spectacular $84.6 million and should »

'Judgement at Nuremberg' Oscar winner Maximilian Schell dies at 83

Vienna (AP) — Austrian-born actor Maximilian Schell, a fugitive from Adolf Hitler who became a Hollywood favorite and won an Oscar for his role as a defense attorney in "Judgment at Nuremberg," has died. He was 83.   Schell's agent, Patricia Baumbauer, said Saturday he died overnight at a hospital in Innsbruck following a "sudden and serious illness," the Austria Press Agency reported.   It was only his second Hollywood role, as defense attorney Hans Rolfe in Stanley Kramer's classic "Judgment at Nuremberg," that earned him wide international acclaim. Schell's impassioned but unsuccessful defense of four Nazi judges on trial for »

TV Ratings: Big Friday for 'Shark Tank' and 'Blue Bloods' while 'Enlisted' and 'Bones' slip

Fast National ratings for Friday, January 31, 2014.   All of the normal Friday champs had big nights, with "Hawaii Five-0," "Blue Bloods" and "Undercover Boss" all hitting season highs and "Shark Tank" coming in strong, albeit below last week's series highs, as ABC and CBS scored their normal primetime victories.    While "Shark Tank" may have been down from last week, both "Last Man Standing" and "The Neighbors" were up for ABC.   And not only were they season highs for the CBS hour-longs, but you'd have to go back a bit to find any competition. For "Blue Bloods," it »

‘The Lego Movie’ spoofs ‘Man of Steel’ in new trailer

31 January 2014 6:45 PM, PST

(Cbr) If that earlier trailer introduced by Will Arnett’s Batman didn’t sell you on "The Lego Movie", then maybe this one will seal the deal: It’s a pretty much note-perfect send-up of the promos for "Man of Steel" called — what else? — “Man of Plastic.” Directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller ("21 Jump Street," "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs"), the 3D-animated film follows Emmet (Chris Pratt of "Parks and Recreation" and the upcoming "Guardians of the Galaxy"), an unremarkable Lego minfigure who’s mistaken for the MasterBuilder, who’s the key to saving the world. Before he knows it, Emmet is drafted »

Review: 'Enlisted' - 'Homecoming'

31 January 2014 6:30 PM, PST

A review of tonight's "Enlisted" coming up just as soon as I have my erotic fiction boot camp... More episode order shenanigans: "Homecoming" was meant to be the tenth episode, and to air in the fall when Fox would have a slate of NFL games two days later. Once the series was bumped to January, Fox moved it up in the order so that Pam Oliver's cameo and the other football jokes would run right before the Super Bowl. This all seems to be a lot more trouble than it's worth — would anyone really care if Oliver showed up a »

This autistic kid's big score on 'Friday Night Tykes' beats the Super Bowl

31 January 2014 5:08 PM, PST

While most of America is gearing up for the Super Bowl this weekend, autistic kid athlete Grayson Christian's big moment on the football field is probably more inspiring than anything we're likely to see on Sunday. On "Friday Night Tykes" (Tues. at 9:00 p.m. on Esquire Network), a devoted coach makes sure young Grayson gets to feel what it's like to score a winning touchdown -- and convinces his other players to get involved. Watch the clip below and grab the Kleenex.  What do you think about the coach's decision? »

‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ image teases pint-sized Scarlet Witch

31 January 2014 3:45 PM, PST

(Cbr) Empire still has a few more morsels from director Bryan Singer’s "X-Men: Days of Future Past." Flickering Myth has scans of several images from the magazine, but these two are certainly the most intriguing: Above you can see Quicksilver ("American Horror Story" star Evan Peters) and, we assume, his sister Wanda: ...and below Fan Bingbing as Blink: Both characters scored their own covers of the U.K. magazine. Opening May 23, the Fox sequel also stars James McAvoy,Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Halle Berry, Peter Dinklage, Ellen Page, Shawn Ashmore, Daniel Cudmore, Lucas Till, Omar »

11-time Oscar nominee Roger Deakins talks 'Prisoners' and the upcoming 'Unbroken'

31 January 2014 2:16 PM, PST

Two weeks ago cinematographer Roger Deakins picked up his eleventh Oscar nomination to date, and as many who trade in these circles are well aware, he's still on the lookout for his first win. "Prisoners" won't likely be the film to get him there as "Gravity" is gobbling up most of the attention in that field this season, but the consistent recognition (including a twelfth American Society of Cinematographers nomination) is unique and continues to mark Deakins as one of the greats. Indeed, Deakins is "kind of the God of contemporary cinematographers," as one of his longtime collaborators, Joel Coen, told »

Jennifer Lopez proves you can go home again in new video for 'Same Girl'

31 January 2014 1:52 PM, PST

She could probably buy the Bronx by now, or at least distribute enough cologne and clothes from her perfume and dress lines to make it really smell and look good, but Jennifer Lopez is determined to make us believe that she is the “Same Girl” as she always was. In the video for the "American Idol" judge's  new track, “Same Girl, she leaves her luxury doorman building to take another trip back to her roots on the No. 6 train back to Brooklyn. She’s mad at the unnamed folks who are trying to hold her down and who don’t realize that »
