Brenner, who had been fighting cancer, died peacefully at his home in New York City with his family at his side, according to Jeff Abraham, his friend and publicist.
"David Brenner was a huge star when I met him and he took me under his wing. To me, historically, he was the godfather of hip, observational comedy," comedian Richard Lewis said in a statement. "He mentored me from day one ... His passing leaves a hole in my life that can never be replaced."

Comedian David Brenner died today at his home in New York, NY. He was 78. A favorite of Tonight Show host, Johnny Carson, Brenner made over 150 appearances as a guest and substitute host on the NBC latenight show, starting in the ’70s. Former Writers Guild of America West president Patric M. Verrone, the leader of the WGA’s raucous 2007-08 strike, is seeking a seat in the California State Senate.
Verrone is one of six Democratic candidates who have filed to succeed Democrat State Senator Ted Lieu, who is running for the Congressional seat of retiring Rep. Henry Waxman.
Verrone is a resident of Pacific Palisades, the northern part of the 26th District which runs on the coastline starting in Palos Verdes and including Beverly Hills, West Hollywood and part of Hollywood.
