Series will explore the origin stories of Commissioner James Gordon and the villains that made Gotham famous

Fox’s upcoming Batman origin story “Gotham” has cast its Penguin, faithful Wayne family butler Alfred, and the boss and fiancee of Det. James Gordon.

“Another Earth” actor Robin Lord Taylor (pictured) will play Oswald Cobblepot — perhaps better known to comic-book fans as The Penguin. With the brains of a chess grandmaster and the morals of a jackal, Oswald Cobblepot is a low-level psychopath who hides his sadistic lust for power behind an exquisitely polite demeanor.

Sean Pertwee (“Alan Partridge”), meanwhile, will play Alfred Pennyworth, a tough-as-nails ex-marine from East London who has loyally served Thomas and Martha Wayne. After their deaths, he becomes fiercely protective of their young son, Bruce Wayne.

“Burn Notice’ alum Zabryna Guevara will play Capt. Essen, Gordon’s boss at the GCPD Homicide Squad. Essen balances police work and politics with Machiavellian skill.

Rounding out the crop of new castings is Erin Richards (“Breaking In,” “Being Human”), who’ll play Barbara Kean, Gordon’s fiancee and a sophisticated emergency room doctor. Kean is described as joyful, but with an edge of vulnerability. She stands by her future husband, which can be difficult in a city as corrupt as Gotham.

“Southland” alum Ben McKenzie has been cast as Gordon.

From Warner Bros. Television, “Gotham” is based on characters published by DC Comics. Bruno Heller (“The Mentalist,” “Rome”) wrote the pilot script and will serve as executive producer, while Danny Cannon “CSI,” “Nikita”) will direct and executive produce the pilot.

Wow. That all sounds pretty awful.

Really? ‘Cause, actors aside, this all sounds fairly close to “Batman: Year One”, except for Gordon being in Gotham a little earlier than he would have been. We all know Alfred was special forces before he was a butler, and there actually was an “Essen” on the GCPD, though her character sounds a little different in this synopsis.

Haha, there’s always someone uneducated in the source material who is the first to make a negative comment. You’re right, Stephen, this sounds a lot like Year One (with a bit of 2012′s Earth One thrown in for good measure). With the quality of actors they’ve signed on so far this show is sounding pretty solid.

In the Batman Year One comic Essen was a fellow Detective that Gorden had a breif affair with.

On a side note. In Dark Knight Rises they show Gordon comforting Bruce at the poliece station just after his parents are killed.
