The Dean Close School, originally "The Dean Close Memorial School", was founded in 1886 in memory of local former Rector of Cheltenham and Dean of Carlisle, Reverend Francis Close (1797-1882), an uncompromising champion of the Evangelical cause, as well as the founder of Cheltenham great tradition of education. Four years after his death a subscription list was opened and £10,000 was provided to endow the school.
Its main buildings in Shelbourne Road are of sombre red brick decorated with Dutch gables designed by the local architect W. H. Knight. They date from 1886, but the chapel did not appear until 1923. In 1969 Dean Close School became co-educational.
Of the accomplished past pupils the most well known are the poet James Elroy Flecker, the son of the first headmaster of the school, Rolling Stone Brian Jones and the artist Francis Bacon.
In addition to academic studies, all pupils are able to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities, chosen from an extensive and varied list. The school has a superlative 550-seat professional style Bacon Theatre, swimming pool, art school with BonBernard gallery to display pupils' work, gym, hi-tech recording studio, concert hall and many other facilities.
