STAN WALKER, along with friends and fellow kiwi artists MAISEY RIKA, RIA HALL and TROY KINGI have taken on a challenge to get a Maori song to #1 on the NZ TOP 40 SINGLES CHART, it has been 30 years since a Maori language track held this chart position. The single is titled AOTEAROA and is available on iTunes now.
Inspired by the famous song Poi E by the PATEA MAORI CLUB which to date is the only Maori language song to reach #1 in New Zealand history since 1984; not only did this song reach #1 and stay there for four weeks, but it was also the highest selling single of that year.
AOTEAROA was co-written and produced by Stan and VINCE HARDER. The lyrics will be published in both Maori and English.
Of this initiative Stan says, “we all have to connect ourselves back to the mainland where we are all from. I have never been more proud to be Maori. It doesn’t matter who you are or where you’ve come from, to live in New Zealand, you are us and we are you. We are one!”
Today also marks the beginning of MAORI LANGUAGE WEEK which runs from 21-27 July in New Zealand.
A portion of the proceeds from the song will go towards the Raukatauri Music Therapy Centre.
