The Center for Eurasian, Russian and East European Studies (CERES) at Georgetown University directs one of the nation's preeminent Master's degree programs and hosts a rich outreach program of events on the region, for K-12 educators and audiences in Washington, DC, and nationwide.

Support international education programs funded by the U.S. government

In summer 2011, per the terms of the budget agreement, the U.S. Department of Education’s Title VI/Fulbright-Hays International Education programs funding was cut from $126 million in FY 2010 to $76 million in FY 2011 – a cut of $50 million dollars, or, for Title VI, a cut of 46.53%. Congress is still reviewing appropriations bills for 2012, but informal discussions with the Hill and officials at USED indicate that these cuts will be sustained and/or increased for FY 2012 and may also include cuts to Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships that fund graduate study. CERES was forced to cut courses, events expenses that include travel, honoraria and materials for our outreach programming and support for library acquisitions on the region. While we are making due with less in terms of programming, cutting FLAS fellowships would prevent talented students from studying the region, reducing our capacity of experts on eastern Europe and Eurasia and ultimately affecting our nation's security.
