At a recent event with Professors Charles King, Kathleen McNamara and Angela Stent, Dr. Stent answered the now common questions: “Is this a new Cold War?” “No,” she said, “but it sure feels like it.” During the Cold War, both sides behaved according to fairly predictable patters, but Stent noted that with the annexation of Crimea, “we [the West] do not know what the rules of the game are anymore.”

Before a room of several dozen students, faculty, and community members, six of the current Mortara Undergraduate Research Fellows (MURFs) presented their research projects and discussed their experience with Georgetown University’s newest undergraduate research program. The program, launched in the Spring of 2012, provides the opportunity for three SFS freshmen per year to engage in a 4-year long research relationship with a faculty mentor and learn the hands-on research skills they need to be able to generate high-quality, independent research by the time they graduate from Georgetown.

In a talk given February 6th, author Gary Bass discussed his book The Blood Telegram: Nixon, Kissinger, and a Forgotten Genocide. The talk was moderated by Christine Fair and introduced by Mortara Director, Kathleen McNamara. The Blood Telegram explores the role that Richard Nixon and Henry Kissinger played in supporting Pakistanâs military dictatorship, a decision that led to a string of consequences that dramatically altered Asiaâs future.

The Mortara Center kicked off the new year with a documentary film showing and interesting conversation on January 13, 2014. Eva Orner (Oscar winning producer) and Saad Mohseni (head of Afghanistan’s MOBY Media Group), together with Amb. Cynthia Schneider (Georgetown) discussed Orner’s documentary “The Network” and the effect that media has had within Afghan society.

On November 11th, the 2012 Lepgold Book Prize recipient Professor Fontina Christia (MIT) discussed her book, Alliance Formation in Civil Wars, at the Annual Lepgold Lecture at the Mortara Center. Lepgold committee member Andrew Bennett presented her with the medal honoring the late Georgetown professor, Joseph Lepgold. Other committee members, Kathleen McNamara and David Edelstein, were joined by a number of faculty and students for the lively lecture and Q&A session.
