Much of the essence of Philadelphia lies in the features described previously—its small-town atmosphere, its parks and tree-shaded downtown squares and streets, and its innumerable memorials to the American past (which served as focal points for the centennial and bicentennial celebrations of 1876 and 1976), as well as its teeming riverside and factories and its diverse business institutions.
