Against the background of a widely discussed rapprochement between Russia and the countries of Latin America, the world’s media has started to publish increasingly frequent reports on Russia’s efforts to boost military cooperation with the region, in particular with Argentina. Numerous rumors about the recent sale of 12 Russian Su-24 fighter-bombers to Argentina sparked concern in the British Government, to the point that it was suggested that more Typhoon fighters should be deployed on the disputed Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas).

The United States’ New Role in the Ukraine Crisis: Pros and Cons for Russia

Igor Istomin PhD in Political Science, Senior Lecturer, Department of Applied International Analysis, MGIMO University

The late January, media reports about U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry visiting Moscow proved misleading, with the Foggy Bottom's press service plainly stating that no such trip was planned. However, in recent weeks Washington seems to have become much more active on Ukraine, to the extent that it seems as if it is working to provide a new background for Kerry's talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on the sidelines of the February 6-8 Munich Security Conference.

Lebanese Presidential Elections

Mario Abou Zeid Research Analyst Carnegie Middle East Center in Beirut

Eight months of continuous presidential vacuum are placing Lebanon on high alert. The absence of a president means that the constitution is being violated and substituted by minimal consensus among political players to keep the government working. Political negotiations through democratic institutions among conflicting parties are replaced by bilateral dialogues among the major political parties.

Instead of blaming Paris’s atrocities on rather ‘fictional’ clashes of civilizations, the West should reflect on its own responsibilities and the ways it has more or less directly bred terrorism in the latest decades. Only thinking this way will help us find a way out.

Seven Steps beyond the Horizon of the Crisis

Andrei Kortunov Director General of the Russian International Affairs Council

But sooner or later all crises come to an end, and life goes on. As such, the time is ripe to think of how Russia will build a relationship with the outside world “after Ukraine.” Of course, much depends on the outcome of the crisis: on whether it ends in compromise or a long-term chronic conflict between Russia and the West, in a strengthening the Ukrainian statehood, or in its ultimate collapse. But whatever the final scene of the Ukrainian tragedy, the fundamental questions that Moscow will inevitably face when the curtain finally falls are already evident.

Facing Difficult Choices: The South Caucasus between Russia and the European Union

Facing Difficult Choices: The South Caucasus between Russia and the European Union

Elkhan Nuriyev is a global energy associate at the Brussels Energy Club.

The mounting tension over Ukraine has introduced numerous dangers to the security situation in the South Caucasus. These negative ramifications are further exacerbated by the fact that Russia holds the key to resolving conflicts in the post-Soviet realm, especially in the absence of greater Western assertiveness. But Moscow and Brussels are caught up in geopolitical competition over the region. Such continued competition prolongs the cycles of instability and could sooner or later spill over into Russia and the EU. Devising a coherent strategy for the region that focuses on an integrated, coordinated approach and recognizes the shared interests of Russia, the EU, and the South Caucasus countries is a pressing challenge that remains unmet.

Two years ago, together with a broad group of former officials and experts, we warned that, in the absence of a new military and political strategy for the Euro-Atlantic region, there was a risk that stability would weaken and security would break down. Sadly, there are clear signs that this is happening, with Europe now beset by its most serious and deadly crisis in decades.

International Events of 2014

International Events of 2014

2014 was an eventful year. It was clear from its very beginning that Ukraine would be high on the international agenda. However, few could imagine that the Ukrainian crisis would dominate world events. Developments in the Transatlantic region and in Central and Eastern Europe depended a lot on what was happening in Ukraine. But there were some events that passed unnoticed behind the rhetoric about Ukraine.

Yingluck Shinawatra was banned from politics for the next five years by an overwhelming majority (190 lawmakers voted to impeach her, 18 voted against impeachment, 8 abstained, and 3 ballots were declared invalid).
