Hobart school reports decades-old sexual misconduct allegations

A former Calvin Christian School student has made an allegation of sexual misconduct happening at the school more than 25 years ago.

The allegation relates to a male teacher who left the school soon after the incident and is believed to be overseas.

The Kingston school said it was made aware of the allegations of sexual abuse dating back to the 1980s on Thursday night.

School principal Iain Belot said he was ''horrified, dismayed and deeply sorry" that abuse could have happened at the school.

He promised to provide any help or support to anyone who may have suffered sexual or physical abuse at the school.

"For the past decade or more, Calvin Christian School has applied rigorous and exhaustive processes in the recruitment of both teaching and support staff," he said.

A letter was sent out to parents informing them of the allegations and staff were briefed on Friday afternoon.

"It isn't a large number. It's a simple case of a complainant and handing it over to police," Mr Belot said.

The school also asked the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse to review its processes.

The allegation follows last year's royal commission hearing into Hobart private boys' school Hutchins School, which heard allegations of a paedophile ring operating in the 1960s.
