Great Barrier Reef: Government to release Reef 2050 Long-Term Sustainability Plan

Posted March 21, 2015 00:03:30

The Federal Government is today expected to release the final version of its long-term plan for the Great Barrier Reef.

The Reef 2050 Long-Term Sustainability Plan satisfies one of the key recommendations of the World Heritage Committee.

The committee will decide in June whether to place the Great Barrier Reef on the "in danger" list.

The final version of the Reef 2050 plan is expected to highlight the Federal Government's ban of dumping in the Marine Park Area.

A draft version of the report was criticised by some scientists as being a plan for sustainable development rather than protecting and conserving the reef.

The new Queensland Government sought urgent amendments to the plan, demanding a new taskforce to determine how to reduce the levels of fertiliser run-offs.

The plan is due to be released at an event on Hamilton Island this afternoon.
