Second Life

Overview

What is Second Life?

Second Life is a 3D virtual environment. Within the computer-rendered world, users can create their own identity (known as an 'avatar') and interact with others in a lifelike social space. It is not a game as there is no objective. It is a space for creating, socialising, dancing, flying or simply exploring. A number of commercial, government and educational organisations have set up a presence in Second Life.

ABC Island

In 2007 the ABC launched its 'ABC Island' in Second Life. The Island was closed by the ABC in September 2012.

The island was managed by a loyal group of ABC Friends, and we are grateful for the contribution they made over the years.

Credits

ABC Island was developed collaboratively with 3D, sound and design students and staff from the Australian Film, Television and Radio School (AFTRS), with creative writing from Jackie Turnure (AFTRS/LAMP) and direction and significant building from SL expert Gary Hayes. Interested Second Life residents known as 'ABC Friends', Lisa Dethridge (RMIT) and renowned artist and animator Nathan Jurevicius were also key collaborators in the project.
