The family living in the real 'Conjuring' house sues Warner Bros

8 hours ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Last night, I put on "Blair Witch 2: Book Of Shadows" for the first time since its release because I know several horror fans who genuinely like the movie and feel like it was misunderstood or overlooked when it came out. While I'm not sure I liked it any more this time than I did when it first opened, one of the things I think is very smart about the film is the way it plays with the confusion about what's real and what's not that was absolutely in the air when the first film was released. At this point, it's hard to imagine a world where people are actually confused about a found-footage/mockumentary film, but in 1999, thanks in large part to the Wild West feel of the early Internet, people really weren't sure what "The Blair Witch Project" was, and that became a huge playful part of the sales pitch. »

What can we learn about 'Doctor Strange' from Scott Derrickson's 10 favorite horror movies?

7 hours ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Scott Derrickson's films up to this point have mainly been in the horror genre; in addition to directing such box-office hits as "The Exorcism of Emily Rose," "Sinister" and "Deliver Us from Evil," he wrote the scripts the 2000 slasher sequel "Urban Legends: Final Cut" and the Pang Brothers' 2007 supernatural horror film "Messengers," among others. Which leads one to wonder: will the director's work on Marvel's "Doctor Strange" lead the McU in a more macabre direction than we've previously seen? Try to garner some clues, if you can, from Derrickson's picks for the 10 greatest horror films of all time, submitted to us as part of this month's Ultimate Horror Movie Poll, which ranked the 100 greatest horror films of all time based on votes sent in by more than 100 horror movie professionals. Will the comic book hero's feature-film debut give us a dash of surrealistic color, a la Dario Argento's most-heralded film? »

Spectre breaks UK box office records for Tuesday and Wednesday takings

Critics may be divided, but Spectre has made a huge impact at the UK box office.

Previews on Monday took £4.1 million, while Tuesday showings on 647 screens across the UK made £6.3m.

Spectre review: Daniel Craig embraces Bond's classic formula, but it doesn't pack Skyfall's emotional punch

That represents the biggest Tuesday takings ever for a movie in the UK, and tops the £6.2m made by predecessor Skyfall on its Friday opening.

The latest Bond film subsequently managed £5.75m on Wednesday, again a UK record for that particular day (via Deadline).

Skyfall took £20.1m from its opening weekend, and it looks inevitable that Spectre will have topped that by the coming Monday, albeit with far more days of screenings under its belt.

On a less positive note, Bond fans have taken to the self-proclaimed "front page of the internet" (Reddit) to express their disappointment with the 24th Bond movie, having been "left. »

Film Review: ‘The Middle Distance’

44 minutes ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

An arrogant Los Angeles business consultant with a penchant for whisky and one-night stands gets a comeuppance of sorts — and ultimately regains a piece of his soul — when he returns to his Midwest roots to deal with his estranged father’s estate. Although Patrick Thomas Underwood’s “The Middle Distance” has a familiar, formulaic feel and banal, wannabe-snappy dialogue, it’s cleanly shot, it moves at a decent clip and its snow-covered landscapes are mighty attractive. Although unlikely to go the distance outside fests and VOD, it should serve as a useful calling card for its debuting director.

In the middle of the winter, glib workaholic Neil (Ross Partridge) receives a call from his younger brother, James (Kentucker Audley), asking him to come and help sell the family’s summer cottage by the lake in New Buffalo, Mich. There he meets his brother’s petite, perky fiancee, Rebecca (Joslyn Jensen »

James and Dave Franco’s ‘The Disaster Artist’ Headed for New Line

New Line is in negotiations to acquire the rights to “The Disaster Artist,” a comedy starring James and Dave Franco following the making of the cult classic film “The Room.”

James Franco will also direct the pic from a script penned by Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber.

The film takes a fun, in-depth look at how Tommy Wiseau came up with the idea of the film hailed by many as one of the worst films ever made. James Franco will play Wiseau while Dave Franco will play Greg Sestero, who co-starred in the film. While many consider it a bad movie, its cult following is wide; theaters across the nation still play the film on midnight runs over the weekend, with many of the screenings involving fan participation similar to “The Rocky Horror Picture Show’s” midnight screenings.

Rise of female monsters shows horror movies are not afraid of big, bad women

1 hour ago | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Guillermo del Toro’s Crimson Peak is one of the most feminine horror films ever, part of a trend for showing women in all their shrieking, axe-murdering glory

Somewhere in the third act of Guillermo del Toro’s Crimson Peak – around the time a manic, shrieking Jessica Chastain is running through the titular haunted estate wielding a meat cleaver – it hit me that I had probably never seen a horror movie that was so unabashedly feminine.

People seem to go back and forth on the genre: sometimes it’s called horror, sometimes (as per Del Toro) “gothic romance”. There are ghosts, gallons of blood, and more than a few memorable facial mutilations.
