Borderlines Writers Circle

The Borderlines Writers Circle is a project begun by the Writer-in-Exile program. It is designed as a welcome mat to multilingual, multicultural writers who live in Edmonton and are beginning to find their way around the Canadian cultural landscape. Every year a small group is selected and put under the spotlight through activities aimed at showcasing their talent. They are also introduced to the “who’s who” and the “what’s what” of Canada’s literary practices, publishing market and governmental policies concerning the arts.

2015 Borderlines Writers Circle

The Writers Guild of Alberta would like to welcome six culturally-diverse writers to the 2015 Borderlines Writers Circle. In partnership with the Edmonton Arts Council, the Borderlines Writers Circle aims to serve multilingual, multicultural writers who live in Edmonton and are beginning to find their way around the Canadian cultural landscape. Each year a small group is selected to participate in activities designed to increase their connections within the local writing community and to advance their writing career in a Canadian context.

This year, the group consists of members who hail from Mexico, Nepal, Russia, Chile, Egypt, and Bangladesh. The genres short story, long fiction, poetry, and nonfiction are represented among these well-published writers. During the course of the program they will put energy into producing literary translations of existing work as well as continue with their current writing projects. The group will be attending monthly WGA events and participate in programming specifically designed to serve their unique needs, and showcase their talent.

We are pleased to introduce Alma Mancilla, Anamol Mani Paudel, Marina Ivanova, Susana Chalut, Yasser Abdel-Latif and Fahim Hassan. Marina has been a short story writer with over 100 publications in Russia, until recently when she began script-writing and won the 2015 Alberta Screen Writers Initiative award.
