Susan Sarandon on Social Media and the Kardashians: ‘They Could Buy America’

Social media has added an extra level of scrutiny — and an entire additional job — to celebrities’ plates, Susan Sarandon told Variety at the Cannes Film Festival.

“Anybody that has a TV series, for instance, they expect you to keep that account up,” Sarandon said, referring to social media accounts. “That’s part of your job now, is to have a certain amount of followers.”

“So much becomes about the way you look and how much weight you have,” she added. “I admire the Kristen Stewarts of the world who can maintain their sanity and seem authentic and keep working when they’re under so much scrutiny all the time. It’s horrible.”

The Kardashians, however, “have it down to a science,” Sarandon said. “But that’s all they do, so that’s their job.”

“That mother is amazing,” she said of Kris Jenner. “What she’s done — starting with a porno film and look, they’ve got a whole — they could buy America.”
