About the Ballot Measures Project

Direct democracy in the U.S. consists of ballot measures, both on the statewide level and on the local level. Ballotpedia covers all statewide ballot measures. The project also covers local ballot measures in California comprehensively, and local ballot measures in other states based on how noteworthy the topic is and the population affected. Moreover, Ballotpedia provides overviews of the laws governing both state and local ballot measures in each state and tracks changes in those laws each year.

In 2017, six statewide ballot measures have been certified for the ballot in five states.

In the typical odd-year election, between 35 and 45 statewide measures appear on ballots in roughly 10 states.
