NEWS - Andrea Romano Retires From Voice Acting Industry
Reported by NCZ on Mon Jul 31 2017

After over 30 years in the voiceover industry, legendary voice director Andrea Romano is hanging up her hat. The news was reported to IGN via Romano's PR agent, Gary Miereanu.

In the past few weeks, Romano was diagnosed with optic neuropathy in one eye - a condition that leads to blindness in that eye. It is this diagnosis that has sadly brought her career to a close, despite her prior hope to continue her work for at least 2 or 3 more years. Since the diagnosis, she made the decision to wrap up her current projects, and is expected to retire within the week.

Andrea Romano's first gig as a voice director was the original DuckTales back in 1987. Since then, she has had a prolific career - her works have ranged from WB's comedic Tiny Toon Adventures and Animaniacs, to action series such as Avatar, The Legend of Korra, and the Voltron and Thundercats reboots. Especially significant is her extensive work on DC Comics' animated endeavours, beginning with the pioneering Batman: The Animated Series in 1992, and continuing through their films to the present day. She is estimated to have directed over 10,000 voiceover sessions, and worked with and cast an endless array of actors. If you've watched a cartoon in the past three decades, you've heard her work.

Romano's official statement is as follows.

"I shall miss so many aspects of this industry – particularly the people I’ve worked alongside, and all the fun that happens on both side of the glass. From the bottom of my heart, I extend my sincere gratitude to every actor, producer, director, engineer and colleague that has helped make this run so incredible. Doing this job, working with all these wonderful people, has been my ultimate blessing. I couldn’t have hoped to spend the past three decades with a better group. I’ve truly been the luckiest person on Earth."

I wish nothing but the best for Andrea and I'm glad that she at least got to bow out at the top of her game. She's more than earned it

The Queen of voice directing in my opinion. So many of the cartoons I watched were voice directed by her & the voice work itself was always very solid. You earned this retirement Andrea Romano. Thanks for all you have done.

Animaniacs, The Boondocks, Freakazoid!, SpongeBob, Batman: TAS, Teen Titans 2k3, DuckTales (woo-ooh); the list goes on. Hands down one of the greatest voice directors within the industry, and certainly a VO monarch. I want to give thanks for all the hard work and effort this woman has put in over the course of her career.

It's sad to hear about the reason behind her retirement , though taking into account the *many* years that she's been casting, directing, and even acting, I say it's well-deserved. So with that said, I'll repeat myself here: thank you for all your contributions to the field, Andrea Romano.

Good for her retiring, but I can't help but feel voice over direction won't be the same without her influence.

@whyofbladez

Yeah, if any retirement is well-deserved it's this one. Hope she and her eye are healthy and she enjoys her retirement.

She's easily one of the queens of VO. Right up there with Kris Zimmerman-Salter and Ginny McSwain among others.
