The lucky one

William Dillard of Keller knows he’s a lucky man. Dillard is like millions of others worldwide orphaned during childhood, whose lives hang in the balance between adoption into happy, loving homes and being bounced between foster homes and orphanages, struggling to find stability.

A Soaring Passion

David Patterson always wanted to fly. As a pre-teen, he shuttled between parents in Los Angeles and San Jose, Calif., on PSA (Pacific Southwest Airlines), the “smiley jets.” Although the trip lasted only an hour, Patterson thought the view out the window was spectacular. The summer after his 10th-grade year, he called a friend, Jeff, “just to catch up.” Jeff said he was taking a summer school course on aviation careers at the local airport, and as part of the course, the school district was paying for two hours of flight lessons. Patterson promptly signed up for the same course.

He said, she said

The resort area known as 30A - a stretch of alluring beach towns along Florida’s Gulf Coast-has long been a popular summer destination for North Texans. With its emerald waters, sugar-white beaches, and close proximity whether you’re flying or driving, it’s a great way for families to enjoy some quality time together and relax in the sun and surf. But what if I told you something that many locals and some knowledgeable travelers have known for years...as great as the Emerald Coast is in the summer, it’s even better in the fall. The crowds aren’t there and neither is the scorching heat. The water’s still warm, and with air temperatures averaging in the mid to high 70s, it’s the perfect time for a long weekend getaway full of outdoor activities and al fresco dining.

The final mile

If you’re a regular reader of K Magazine, you’re probably familiar with Keller resident and UT-Austin student Kristopher Novak, whose story we’ve chronicled over the past year. As part of Texas 4000, the longest annual charity bike ride in the world, Novak and his teammates pedaled their way from Austin to Anchorage, Alaska, to raise money to fight cancer.

Perking interest

Paula Neyman got into the coffee business the way many entrepreneurs do: She had a passion for the product. After a 26-year career in sales and marketing at American Airlines, Neyman started to think that perhaps she could do what Starbucks was doing. Which was, at the time, luring her in twice a day for coffee.
