Cheers: To FWISD Superintendent Dr. Kent Scribner, who congratulated the North Hi Mount Eagle Honor Choir this year at the Junior Achievement Breakfast at the Fort Worth Omni Hotel. Not only did he congratulate them, he took pictures! He also made an appearance at the Arlington Heights High School literacy rally.

Cheers: To the Houston Astros and Los Angeles Dodgers for their beautiful display of patriotism at each World Series game. All were standing with their caps over their heart and some were singing while our national anthem was played. And what great games! Fun to watch.

Cheers: To Target for placing Thanksgiving “back on the menu.” Because it isn’t a big money-making holiday, Thanksgiving has been skipped over too often. First Halloween, then Christmas! I will hold Target in high esteem for this brilliant decision.

Cheers: To James Hawks, Paschal Neighborhood Association president. Before your compassion for community, we weren’t represented. As a result of your leadership and hard work to create our association in 2003, we have a railroad crossing to alert us, sidewalks around the school, speed bumps, and money in the bank.

Jeers: To NFL players for the cowardly way to challenge social injustice. Don’t “take a knee,” take your millions, combine it with resources at your disposal and mentor young black men, adopt a fatherless boy, open community centers that keep boys off the streets. Proactive action makes change, not kneeling!

Cheers: For the Sept. 28 story about local coaches who are in military service. These are the examples that our young student athletes should follow. These examples are standing up for the good in their country rather than kneeling in protest.

Cheers: To those volunteers who left their families and went to the coast to aid the victims of Hurricane Harvey. I am especially proud of my nephew, who drove from Utah all the way to Beaumont to help and be of service.

Cheers and Jeers

Jeers: To the news media and to the people in the metroplex for buying all the gas cans you can and hoarding the fuel, while the people in Houston are helping others through their crisis. Hope you all have enough gas to go shopping and the bars.

Cheers: To TCU Coach Patterson for his 150th win! Bigger cheers for how he has led our football program with integrity and class. He appears to care more about building honorable men than just winning football games. You make TCU fans proud. We know we can count on you.

Cheers and Jeers

Cheers: To everyone who made the solar eclipse watching gala at TCU a fun and educational adventure. TCU welcomed people of many ages who donned special eclipse-gazing glasses to peer at the sun. Cheers: to Dr. Magnus L. Rittby in the Department of Physics and Astronomy for guiding the participation of TCU academic units for this amazing event.

Cheers: To Jack Miller and Haltom’s Jewelers for sponsoring the Time and Temperature telephone number. A wonderful service for Fort Worth and area residents, especially us old-timers.

Jeers: To Tarrant Regional Water District for the outrageous price ($20) just to come in and see the only sand sculpture at Twin Points Park. I can understand a higher price to launch a boat, but just to enter, park for a short time and leave is unconscionable. Does TRWD think it’s Jerry Jones?

Cheers: To Andy Fancher for preserving the stories of veterans by recording their testimonies, then editing the videos and putting them on his YouTube channel. Thank you for shining a well-deserved spotlight on these true American heroes.

Cheers: To the longest tenured head coach in TCU history, Richard Sybesma. Thank you for all the roles you’ve played within the TCU and Fort Worth community: swimming coach, cheerleader, mentor, officiant, leader, fan and all-around great guy. Congrats on retirement!

Cheers: To the lovely Amon Carter Museum docent Kathryn Allen for her outstanding 2 p.m. public collection tour on July 6. She shared her extensive knowledge of the works we visited in such a warm and interesting way. Thank you for an excellent experience. I love Fort Worth!

Cheers & Jeers

Cheers and Jeers

Jeers: To the Benbrook City Council for proposing a $1.5 million bridge over the Clear Fork. We do not wish to have a really nice residential area with bikers and walkers replaced with traffic, crime and litter. We are as “developed” as we want to be. No bridge!

Cheers & Jeers

Cheers: To the TCU baseball team’s College World Series win over Louisville June 22. Jeers for identifying three TCU players by name and number but not Coach Jim Schlossnagle, number 22, who’s also in the front-page photo. He’s deserving of recognition, too, isn’t he?

Cheers and Jeers

Jeers: To the Fort Worth Catholic Diocese: San Mateo, the small Catholic church on Lovell Avenue near University Drive, has been closed and fenced off for months, preventing the people from attending church and taking care of the grounds. It is an eyesore from the street and a sad memory for the members who want to take care of their church.

Cheers: To Gordon Dickson’s fabulous visit to Boquillas del Carmen, Coahuila. Memories flooded back about boat rides, shopping, taquitos, and Corona. It was one of our favorite side trips while camping at Big Bend Ranch. I felt young again.
