The share of Latino parents in the U.S. who ensure the language lives on with their children declines as their immigrant connections become more distant. While nearly all immigrant parents say they speak Spanish to their children, this share drops to 71% among U.S.-born second-generation Latino parents and to just 49% among third or higher generation Latino parents.

Amid public concerns over Cambridge Analytica’s use of Facebook data and a subsequent movement to encourage users to abandon Facebook, there is a renewed focus on how social media companies collect personal information and make it available to marketers.
Pew Research Center has studied the spread and impact of social media since 2005, when just 5% of American adults used these platforms. The trends tracked by our data tell a complex story that is full of conflicting pressures. On one hand, the rapid growth of the platforms is testimony to their appeal to online Americans. On the other, this widespread use has been accompanied by rising user concerns about privacy and social media firms’ capacity to protect their data.

Millions of people see science-related information on their Facebook feeds or elsewhere on social media on any given day.
And as more and more rely on social media platforms to get news and information, the science people see on these platforms may influence public views and understanding of science-related issues.
So what kind of science content are people most likely to encounter on these platforms?
In an effort to better understand this, Pew Research Center systematically analyzed six months’ worth of posts from 30 of the most followed science-related pages on Facebook.
What we found is that the kinds of science stories people most likely see are often practical tips with “news you can use” or promotions for programs and events rather than new developments in the science, engineering and technology world. And science-related issues at the center of public divisions – like climate change, GMOs or childhood vaccines – rarely appear in posts on these Facebook pages.
