RESPONSIBILITY

Our distillers hold a deep commitment to alcohol responsibility, the community and the environment. We strive to promote safety and responsibility along every stop on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail® to preserve the the sustainable growth of Kentucky’s signature Bourbon industry.

We’ve made significant investments to collectively promote responsible consumption, reduce impaired driving, prevent underage access to alcohol, and create a hospitable environment for non-drinkers. We also work to protect the environment by preserving Kentucky’s limestone water resources, diverting distillers’ spent grains from landfill to the farm, and supporting initiatives that support the sustainability of barrels’ white oak.

Join us in our efforts to make sure the Kentucky Bourbon Trail® remains one of our Commonwealth’s most celebrated experiences by completing our Responsibility Checklist!

BEFORE YOUR TRIP

  • KNOW YOUR FACTS.

Bust myths about responsible drinking, and learn how factors such as gender and weight affect your intoxication rate using the BACPlus Calculator at Responsibledrinking.org.

  • SET YOUR LIMIT.

Alcohol affects everyone differently. Once you learn how it affects you, set a limit for your daily consumption along the Kentucky Bourbon Trail®, and develop an itinerary that helps you stick to it.

  • PACK YOUR ID.

You must be of legal drinking age to enjoy Kentucky Bourbon. Most distilleries will use Intellicheck software to verify identification authenticity and prevent underage access to alcohol.

  • PLAN YOUR RIDE.

You have too many good safe ride choices not to make the right one. Use one of our transportation partners to travel safely between distilleries, or come with a designated driver. Many distilleries offer designated driver perks.

DURING YOUR TRIP

  • EAT FIRST.

Take advantage of the delicious dining options available along the Kentucky Bourbon Trail®, and grab a bite to eat before you drink. A full stomach can slow alcohol’s absorption rate into the bloodstream.

  • TAKE A CLASS.

Become an Executive Bourbon Steward at Moonshine University or craft your own cocktails in distilleries’ classes. Our experience shows people who respect alcohol’s craft are less likely to abuse it.

  • HYDRATE.

Enjoy a glass of Kentucky’s refreshing limestone water between every drink to pace your consumption and appreciate one of the natural resources that makes Kentucky Bourbon so great. If you want to learn more, you can even take the Bourbon & Branch water tour at Louisville’s WaterWorks Museum.

  • ORDER A MOCKTAIL.

Take a break with a custom crafted non-alcoholic drink and explore mixers that taste great with Bourbon and on their own. When you order a mocktail at any SV Foundation partner, $1 of your purchase will provide support for Kentucky’s homeless and recovery communities.

  • RESPECT THE BARREL.

Visit Independent Stave Company to learn about the production of Kentucky Bourbon barrels and the sustainability of white oak.

  • TALK TO YOUR KIDS.

Walk with them through Frazier History Museum’s Kentucky Bourbon Trail® exhibit and start an open and honest dialogue about the realities and harms of underage drinking. You can also visit Responsibility.org for more parent and teacher resources.

AFTER YOUR TRIP

  • GET LOCAL.

Review the laws and statistics around underage drinking and impaired driving in your own state at Responsibility.org.

  • HOST RESPONSIBLY.

Teach your friends to enjoy Bourbon like a Kentuckian with responsible hosting tips at Kybourbon.com.
