In this study, we looked at 22K news images with people in them, and found that 53% exclusively depict men. 22% exclusively depict women. How did we do this? We built a data pipeline in and a machine learning system to label thousands of images.

We’re putting out a study of posts from 17 news outlets today. In it, we ask: if you took every person depicted in a news post from these outlets, how many would be men, and how many would be women? The results may or may not be what you expected

Women are much less visible than men in news images on Facebook. We can't say whether they are underrepresented or overrepresented in the media, but this provides some context to the important topic of representation of women in our society -

The AEJ:Micro annual editor's report prompts a philosophical question: if a journal has standards so high that it never accepts a manuscript, does it exist? Certainly if all it manages to do is waste authors’ time (and submission fees), it shouldn’t.

Top item on my wish list for AI researchers: write a blog post to accompany your paper. This is a chance to reach a broader audience, in a more accessible format. Some of my favorite blog post/paper pairs-

Far more people may read your blog post than will read an academic paper. This is a chance to get your message to a broader audience, in a more conversational and accessible format. You can and should link to your academic paper from your blog post, so there’s no need to worry about including all the technical details. People will read your paper if they want more detail!

My 10-year-old asked "what's wrong?" so I told him that getting a journal rejection still stings even after 17 years of being a professor. So he says "of course it's going to sting a bit" and he gave me a tight, tight hug. Now it's all okay. Wisdom doesn't only come with age.
