Job Ad–Florence Kay Postdoctoral Fellowship in African and African Diaspora Art

Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts invites applications for a two-year, non-renewable Florence Kay Postdoctoral Fellowship at the rank of Lecturer in African and African Diaspora Art, beginning in the Fall 2019. We welcome a variety of disciplinary and interdisciplinary perspectives on African and African Diaspora Art History. The fellow will pursue their own research and writing and teach two courses (one per semester) while participating in and contributing to the rich intellectual life of the Brandeis community, in affiliation with the departments of African and Afro-American Studies and Fine Arts. The fellowship includes a salary of $58,000, plus benefits, with moving expenses (approximately $1,500), and a research fund of $4,000 per year. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in hand by the commencement of the fellowship, preferably received within the past six years.

University of Kentucky (deadline: January 15, 2019)

Job Ad–Various Tenure-Track Positions in  African American and Africana Studies 

The program in African American and Africana Studies (AAAS) at the University of Kentucky invites applications for tenure-track positions at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. We are inaugurating an interdisciplinary major with a significant new investment by the College of Arts and Sciences, and support from other colleges and programs in the University, and we are recruiting several faculty for this growing program. We are searching broadly for scholars whose research and teaching will complement our faculty, add breadth and richness to our new major, while also contributing to their home department. We also seek specialists whose research (or creative activity) is focused on Africa, African Americans, and/or the African Diaspora, in disciplines that include the arts (including visual arts, performing arts, dance, theater, and music), the humanities (including history and particularly west African history), art history, musicology, performance studies, language and literature, film studies, digital studies, philosophy, and religious studies), the social sciences (including anthropology, sociology, psychology, and geography) and fields of business (including global finance, economics of inequality, management, and marketing). The appointment would be in the home department and home college of the successful candidate, and teaching and service would be allocated between AAAS and that home department. Candidates who have successfully developed curricula for new programs, and who have worked within interdisciplinary contexts, are especially urged to apply.

A Ph.D. or equivalent must have been awarded at the time of appointment. There are currently two faculty being hired for African American and Africana Studies. Job Ad–Associate Professor of History and African American Studies 

The Department of History and the Center for Diversity and Gender Studies invites applications for an Associate Professor position to coordinate a new interdisciplinary African American Studies undergraduate minor at Texas State University beginning fall 2019.

Required Qualifications:

  • PhD in African American history or related field (e.g. African American studies);
  • A track record of research and teaching related to African American history;
  • A record of or demonstrated potential for success in leading, developing or managing an academic program.

To be eligible for hire at the associate professor rank, the candidate must meet the requirements for the rank as established by the University and the Department of History, including an active research agenda with a record of scholarship that complements the strengths of the department. The successful candidate will receive the appropriate rank and title based upon University and Department established guidelines.

Job Ad-One Year Lecturer Position in American Art History

Responsibilities: Candidates should be prepared to teach three courses per semester, including one section of the Introduction to Art History survey, specialized undergraduate classes, and/or a graduate seminar in the applicant’s field of expertise.

Qualifications:

  • D. or A.B.D. in Art History; or American Studies, African American Studies, Africana Studies, Latin American Studies, or Asian American Studies with an emphasis in visual culture.

Preference will be given to candidates with college-level teaching experience.

Job Ad–Mellon Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Africana Studies

The Africana Studies Department at Williams College invites applications for a two-year post-doctoral fellowship in Africana Studies, beginning July 1, 2019.  We welcome applications from candidates who have completed their PhD within the last five years and also those who have not yet completed their PhD, but will have the PhD in hand by the start date of the appointment.

We seek a candidate who studies processes of language translation both within African Diasporic communities, and between African Diasporic communities and the wider world. Candidates might hold expertise in any number of disciplinary or methodological approaches so long as they situate and center the politics of translation practices in the African diaspora. The position requires vision, initiative, and a desire to join our vibrant community of scholars, practitioners, and activists.  Williams is an institution that places a high value on undergraduate teaching; consequently, we strongly prefer applicants who can demonstrate in their supporting materials a capacity for excellent teaching and who have a commitment to working effectively with a student population that is broadly diverse with regard to gender, race, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, and religion. The teaching load is one course each semester.

The successful candidate will be appointed full-time for a term of two years and will have a teaching load of one course each semester. The salary for this position is $55,000 per year. The fellow will also be provided with full benefits including health and dental insurance, plus an allowance of $3,000 per year for research and professional travel. This position is made possible by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

Job Ad–Post-doctoral Fellowship in Race and Gender Studies

The Department of History at Rutgers University announces a post-doctoral fellowship for scholars pursuing research in race and gender studies. The successful applicant must have the doctorate in hand at the time of application, be no more than six years beyond the Ph.D., and be able to teach history courses. The fellowship of $60,000 is for one year and includes benefits and a $5,000 research stipend. Job Ad–Jack Miller Center Post-Doctoral Fellowship

Northwestern’s Center for Legal Studies is pleased to continue a collaborative partnership with the Jack Miller Center for Teaching America’s Founding Principles and History.  We seek applications for the centerpiece of the partnership:  a two-year post-doctoral fellowship held in residence at Northwestern University’s Center for Legal Studies beginning September 1, 2019. The post-doctoral fellow will offer three courses per year on topics pertaining to early American and Atlantic Enlightenment history, political and economic thought, and/or social science. In addition to engaging in an active research and publishing agenda, the candidate is expected to provide a reasonable amount of assistance with organizing other activities associated with the Fellowship and the Legal Studies Program.  The annual salary for the fellow is $50,000, plus fringe benefits and a $1,500 renewable annual research budget. The Gilder Lehrman Center for the Study of Slavery, Resistance, and Abolition, part of the MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies at Yale University, invites applications for its 2019-2020 Fellowship Program.

The Gilder Lehrman Center typically offers two types of postdoctoral and faculty fellowships that advance the study of slavery, its role in the creation of the modern world, and its legacies. They are the one-month and fourth-month Postdoctoral and Faculty Fellowships and the year-long Human Trafficking and Modern Day Slavery Fellowship.

Job Ad–Penn Program on Race, Science, and Society Postdoctoral Research Associate

The Penn Program on Race, Science, and Society (PRSS) invites applications for a postdoctoral research associate to work with PRSS and the Penn and Slavery Project, July 1, 2019-June 30, 2020. The Penn and Slavery Project investigates the University of Pennsylvania’s relationship to the institution of slavery. PRSS’s work in the Penn and Slavery Project focuses on the legacies of slavery and racism in medical education. PRSS seeks to foster transformative approaches to the role of race in science and society through collaborative engagement with scientists, scholars, and students from social science, biological, medical, public health, and humanistic perspectives.

The postdoctoral research associate will synthesize the Penn and Slavery Project’s prior findings regarding the connections between Penn’s medical school and slavery, research the legacy of the medical school’s connections with slavery in historical and contemporary medical training, participate in developing proposals for addressing that legacy in collaboration with the medical school, and help to share the project’s findings and proposals with the Penn community and the broader public.
