Hong Kong protest march grows and crowds take over streets close to government headquarters

  • Stronghold of previous week's protest and Occupy movement Harcourt Road grinds to halt
  • Six lanes of Gloucester Road occupied from Fenwick Street onward
Topic |   Hong Kong extradition law
Crowds formed in Victoria Park and filled subway stations across Hong Kong as another mass march against the government’s
extradition bill
 began at 2.30pm.
In a dramatic about-face, the city's leader
announced on Saturday
she would suspend the controversial bill, after a widespread public backlash that saw hundreds of thousands
take to the streets
to oppose it and
violent clashes
between protesters and police.
Chief Executive
Carrie Lam
Cheng Yuet-ngor said she was hitting the pause button to prevent further violence, but refused to withdraw the bill, insisting it was justified and asking for a second chance to build a better public consensus.
But opponents of the bill are holding another mass rally, refusing to accept anything short of the complete withdrawal of the bill, and demanding Lam apologise for her handling of the controversy. Many are also
calling for her resignation
