Derby County 1-1 West Bromwich Albion: Late Kenneth Zohore penalty ensures spoils are shared as Slaven Bilic becomes first manager to be SENT OFF under new rules

  • Three penalties were given at Pride Park this afternoon by referee Gavin Ward
  • Martyn Waghorn opened the scoring but his second penalty was saved
  • A late penalty saw Albion earn a point after a soft foul was given against Derby
  • Slaven Bilic was given a red card, the first manager to do so under new rule

Controlling his temper has always been a problem for Slaven Bilic, which could mean a lot of red cards for the West Brom coach this season.

Bilic was torn between apologising for and justifying his volatile reaction to a series of controversial decisions.

He lasted 87 minutes at Pride Park before referee Gavin Ward waved a second yellow card and ordered him to the stands.

The straw that broke the camel's back was a goal kick given when Albion should have had a corner.

It followed a furious reaction just before half-time when assistant referee Mark Pottage persuaded Ward to point to the spot after Filip Krovinovic's shoulder struck the ball.

Martyn Waghorn failed to convert the penalty, having already succeeded with one in the first few minutes. Even a late equaliser – Kenneth Zahore from the penalty spot, of course – failed to stop the simmering anger.

'I reacted a few times, the penalty and the corner that wasn't given. Did I over react? From their point of view I did but from my point of view I didn't,' Bilic said.

'I am wrong. I will have to control myself. I have to calm myself down a bit. I can't understand why I can't voice my opinion. West Brom is expecting me, it's part of the job.'

Derby have still to win at home this season and Dutchman Phillip Cocu was as irritated as his counterpart, but with his own players – particularly Max Lowe for conceding the penalty and Waghorn for his second miss of the season.

'It is disappointing,' Cocu said. 'If Waggy scores a second penalty then victory is ours. Now he misses again and for the team it's a big blow.

'I told the lads at half- time be careful no crazy tackles. That's why we haven't got three points.'
