    Next week Austin City Council is set to take up a resolution to ban or limit the use of: tear gas and impact munitions, deadly force, chokeholds, military-grade equipment, no-knock warrants, facial recognition. This is one of their most concise and poignant "whereas" clauses.

    It's hard to imagine how some of these arts organizations will recover with numbers like these, especially when almost 40% of TX respondents said they aren't confident they'll survive. In Texas, orgs reported: $72,308,100 in total losses 1,513 layoffs 2,957 furloughs

    No surprise here: 96 percent of Texas organizations that responded to the survey said they had to cancel some kind of event because of the pandemic. That only adds to the financial pressure many of these groups are under.

    VERY important thread with resources for journalists!! We have an immense responsibility and it’s imperative that we are listening to and amplifying marginalized voices, *without* doing more harm. Journalism is not immune to systemic racism; let’s listen, learn, and do better.

    1/ Some of the discussions I've seen about journalism ethics while covering police violence here are sickening. The rules we've been taught to abide by need to be dismantled and rethought. That's why I've made a thread of resources and thoughts for those covering protests:

    With lots of talk this morning about the Insurrection Act and whether the President can and should use the federal military to help maintain / restore order, I'm re-upping this on what that statute authorizes, how it relates to the Posse Comitatus Act, and open questions:

    To emphasize, the Insurrection Act requires a formal proclamation in order to be invoked. Trump *threatened* to use it if state National Guards aren’t effective, but vague threats and ambiguous speeches don’t cut it. He wants to look tough without actually taking responsibility.

    Trump says he’s “strongly recommended to every governor” that they use state National Guard troops to quell disorders. Does *not* invoke the Insurrection Act to call out federal troops, at least in states. Not clear what authority he’s relying on to use federal troops in D.C.
