Kate Beckinsale Could Return to 'Underworld'

Underworld

Given that Kate Beckinsale has already starred in four Underworld movies -- and that the series seemed to be moving on without her for next year's Beckinsale-free Underworld: Next Generation, starring Theo James -- it seemed somewhat safe to assume that she'd wedged herself into that black bodysuit for the final time. That was a faulty assumption, however, as director Len Wiseman recently come out and told everyone that there's a whole rash of Underworld product on the way -- including a TV series and a pair of films, one of which might bring Beckinsale back into the fold.

"There’s a few things being developed right now and there’s some characters that we really like," Wiseman told IGN. "There’s kind of more of a spin-off of some of the characters like we did with Rise of the Lycans and then another film is also being developed in the works with Kate possibly as well, and then there’s a television series as well. It’s kind of expanding that universe in many ways."

Unless you're the type of filmgoer who really, really enjoys watching werewolves battle vampires, the Underworld series might seem like a thing that probably should have run its course one or two sequels ago, but as Collider notes, this sort of sprawling, spinoff-laden, TV-friendly "universe" is exactly the type of thing all the studios are looking for right now, and since people seem to keep lining up for this stuff -- and it has enough mythology to support five films and counting -- perhaps this makes as much sense as anything currently happening in Hollywood.
