Shawn Levy in Talks for 'Minecraft' Movie

We all chortled when Warner Bros. decided it was going to go ahead and make a movie "based on" Lego bricks, but that turned out pretty okay for everyone, so we'll refrain from laughing at the news that the studio is forging ahead with an "adaptation" of the hugely successful online game Minecraft -- even though it really does seem like they might be pushing their luck with this one.

Deadline reports that director Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum) is in talks to lead development on the project, which for now sounds like he'd be the guy in charge of figuring out how in the world you take an open-ended game that's basically about whatever the player wants it to be about and give it enough narrative structure for a movie people will actually want to watch.

Ultimately, the report suggests that Levy will likely end up directing Minecraft, and although no timetable is mentioned, it seems likely that it'd be the next project on his docket once he's finished promotional duties for Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb, which arrives in December. Best of luck to all involved.
