We live in an uncertain world. Yet we have to manage our businesses and professional lives in that world. Furthermore, the financial collapse of 2008, BP’s Macondo disaster and scandals such as Volkswagen, phone hacking and #MeToo increased the pressure on lawyers and governance professionals to become active in risk management. Covid-19 exposed significant gaps in operational risk planning as the unthinkable became part of everyday life.

However, for many, the subject is a closed book. There has been little or no professional training available relevant to them. This training course introduces those who need to know about risk management to the subject. Participants will gain an understanding of the key issues and terminology. They will also get a feel for the key drivers in culture, behaviour, and ethics that are key in risk decision making.

Whilst learning that we are all risk managers, the course emphasises how much attendees already really know, but provides a structure for them to use that latent knowledge to engage with stakeholders.

The course does not require a risk management background and promotes an easily accessible approach to risk decision making. It is suitable for both in-house lawyers and those who manage risk in private practice.

The course is priced at £960 + VAT.

You will gain 18 hours of verified CPD as well as an optional four hours of private study materials. Completing it fulfills your CPD requirements for the year, including the compulsory risk management component.

Please note there are just 15 spaces on each course.

Webinar 1: Risk - Operating in an Uncertain World
Tuesday 16 March 1.30pm - 3.30pm

The session will look at our uncertain world and how we approach that world in our role as lawyers. Delegates will consider the different categories of risk and be introduced to the key terminology that we will be using throughout the course (risk, legal risk, incidence, impact, controls, mitigations etc.)

Webinar 2: Risky Behaviour - How we Approach Risk
Tuesday 23 March 1.30pm - 3.30pm
The session will look at personal and organisational risk appetites, look at the factors that influence approaches to risk (e.g., culture, ethics, experience, knowledge), consider the biases that affect our risk thinking and put forward a structure for good risk decision making.

Webinar 3: Creating Your Risk Management Plan
Tuesday 30 March 1.30pm - 3.30pm

In this session we will put together key risk management documents focusing on the risk appetite statement, risk register, the difference between gross and net risk.

Webinar 4: Implementing and Managing Your Risk Plan
Tuesday 20 April 1.30pm - 3.30pm

The session will suggest how you implement your plan, the importance of monitoring, reviewing and updating the plan, using after action reviews and near miss reports effectively.

Webinar 5: Crisis Management and How to Have a Good Crisis
Tuesday 27 April 1.30pm - 3.30pm

Using a fictional case study, the session will unfold a crisis and look at possible responses at each stage. Delegates will actively participate by assuming the roles of non-lawyers to understand how legal advice both might help and hinder crisis management.

Tutorial 1
Thursday 25 March 2pm - 3pm
Tutorial one will take place between sessions two and three. It will reflect on sessions one and two, drawing on delegates own experiences of risks situations. In particular, they will be invited to think about behavioural biases that may have been in play and how those affected the handling of the risk situation.

Tutorial 2
Thursday 22 April 2pm - 3pm

Tutorial 2 will take place between sessions four and five. The tutorial will focus on the legal controls and mitigations that delegates can use in their organisation, how they monitor them, how they measure success and what lessons they can draw from their own experiences.

Please note you will be required to complete around 1 hour of preparation ahead of each tutorial.

The assignment will reflect back on the content covered throughout the course. It will be distributed during the course and due to be submitted online by 11.59pm on Friday 30 April.

Gain 4 extra hours of private study materials to enhance and consolidate your knowledge in the context of your own organisation.

Materials will be provided by the course tutor.
