Michigan State is taking steps to make sporting events more sustainable

It’s one of the most common chants from fans at Michigan State University sporting events: Go green.

But Michigan State University may be behind in the race to make its athletics department environmentally sustainable. Big Ten rivals Ohio State University and University of Michigan have established zero waste plans for their large sporting events and tailgates — diverting 90% of waste from landfills by recycling, repurposing and composting — while the Spartans lack an athletics-wide sustainability action plan.

The trend of property buying has continued to grow, especially in Detroit. There are currently 1,300 properties in Detroit that are in some stage of foreclosure, default, auction or bank owned, while the number of homes listed for sale. With the increase of available property being sold and auctioned, there comes an increase in the number of of property buyers. Like Vernon Grimes III, a Detroit native who has recently started his own property development and management company with four other co-owners. There are almost 28 million small businesses in the U.S. and over 22 million are self-employed with no additional payroll or employees, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration.

Known your currency when studying or traveling abroad

The experience of studying abroad has many benefits for students. According to a survey done by the Institute for International Education of Students, 97 percent of students who were surveyed admitted that studying abroad helped increase maturity and 95 percent said it had a lasting impact on their worldview. Before any student should jump into traveling abroad there are some things you need to prepare for. One of the many things is knowing your locations and keeping track of your money, especially when having to change currency. “Many colleges and universities in the U.S. make it so that students do not have to worry about money on a daily basis during their undergraduate career,” says Jarlath McGuckin, an enrollment manager for Council on International Educational Exchange.

The relationship between college students and food assistance has been very scarce since the U.S. Department of Agriculture Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) policy requirements changed and was then adapted by Michigan Department of Health and Human Services in 2011. This has affected various college students when it comes to paying for constant groceries, especially student Cahlan Gillard-Tucker, a junior at Grand Valley State University in Michigan. He opened up and showed a day in the grocery store for him — from budgeting, coupon cutting, and hoping to find sale sides in every aisle. Groceries can get quite expensive for Tucker when you only have less than $20 in assistance to work with.

MSU’s East Black Caucus and NAACP hosted an Election Watch Party on Nov. 8 in Wells Hall. As electoral votes for the elections came in that night African-American student had various opinions, feelings and concerns after final election results as a community at MSU.
