Tournament Sponsor

Hodder Gibson, Scotland's number one educational publisher, has sponsored the Donald Dewar Memorial Debate Tournament since it launched in 1999.

“We are extremely proud to continue our support for the Donald Dewar Memorial Debate Tournament. Over the past 20 years, the tournament has provided an opportunity for hundreds of secondary students in Scotland to hone their debating skills and compete at the highest level. The talent and eloquence of the young people competing each year never ceases to amaze us. Long may it continue!”

Rosie Howie, Senior Publisher, Hodder Gibson

Hodder Gibson publishes a wide range of resources for secondary schools, from textbooks and eTextbooks to study and revision materials, supporting students and teachers through BGE (S1–S3), National 4, National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher. It also provides teacher CPD and student revision events, with face-to-face full-day events in Scotland and after-school webinars that can be accessed online from any location.

As well as sponsoring our annual tournament for over 20 years, Hodder Gibson also provides our winning and runner up schools with £250-worth of educational books each.

  • Follow the SQA course structures. PowerPoints are provided for each specification point across the most popular unit options for N5 and Higher. Use the drag-and-drop course planner tool to easily re-order and add to our resources.
  • Rely on well-structured lessons. The PowerPoints can be used ‘off the shelf’ or tweaked to suit your students’ needs. Each PowerPoint contains:
    • Introductory slides with the specification point, learning intentions and success criteria.
    • Recent and relevant examples and news/video links that illustrate the specification content, putting it into context.
    • SQA-style questions that assess analytical and evaluative skills (with model answers for the essay questions provided in a separate Word document).
  • Develop students’ vocabulary. Every unit is accompanied by key terms flashcards (with definitions on the reverse) for quick-and-easy revision. Students can click a smiley face to self-assess how confident they are with each term.

Prize sponsors

A second prize of £250 is kindly donated to the runners up by the Glasgow Bar Association, which has supported the tournament since 2006.

The Glasgow Bar Association is the representative body for the legal profession in the west of Scotland, although membership is open to all members of the legal profession throughout Scotland. Student membership is also available to those studying law, as long as their place of study or residence is within the territorial jurisdiction of Glasgow Sheriff Court. The Association promotes, represents and protects the rights and interests of its members in the practice law.

"We are keen to support debating, as it is the lifeblood of advocacy skills that are practised daily in courts the length and breadth of our country. Preparing the background of the subject matter you are then presenting and the ability to react as a debate unfolds are key skills, which underpins the work we do. We never cease to be surprised by the enthusiasm, hard work and skills of the debaters and the team effort by those in families and education who support this vital thread. We are grateful to those whose hard work makes these events happen. The Executive Committee of the Glasgow Bar Association is delighted to continue to support these events."

A £50 book token is awarded to the winner of best floor speech of the final, courtesy of the Scottish Law Agents Society

The Scottish Law Agents Society is a Royal Charter company and voluntary organisation, which solely represents the solicitor profession nationally.

"The Scottish Law Agents’ Society values the importance of the Donald Dewar Debating Competition in enabling young people from all over Scotland to participate in and to gain experience of debates on challenging political and social issues. We are delighted to assist the Law Society of Scotland in this project by taking part in the judging process and by sponsoring the floor prize."

Andrew Stevenson, Secretary to the Scottish Law Agents Society

Sponsor our tournament

The Donald Dewar Memorial Debate Tournament is generously supported by Hodder Gibson, The Glasgow Bar Association and The Scottish Law Agents Society. However, we need more support to ensure we can continue to expand and develop. Sponsoring the debate is a fantastic way to support social mobility and the development of Scotland's young people.
