At any one time I think Auschwitz housed ca. 400,000 people.

You are way off. Forty sq. miles equals 10,360 hectares !! But both Auschwitz 1 and 11 (main camp plus Birkenau) together are only 191 hectares!

You’re probably off about the no. of prisoners too “at any one time.” The literature is so purposely misleading that it’s very difficult to find, or to document. Birkenau was eventually enlarged to hold 200,000 people; Monowitz held only 12,000 and Auschwitz main camp 15-20,000. That’s a long way from 400,000.

Actually, the reality of Auschwitz as an “area” set aside for a combination of prisons, factories, farms, administrators, slaves who worked in both the factories and farms as well as within the camp structure itself would seem to make a comparison of Auschwitz and Gaza peculiarly apt. Both were really open-air concentration camps with various built infrastructure. But Auschwitz had more fields and streams etc. than Gaza. Gaza is far more built up than Auschwitz was.

WHY ISRAEL AND AMERICA ARE EXACTLY IDENTICAL

This thought occurred to me that I would like to share before signing off for the night. I think the reason Israel provokes so much anger is because it reflects the worst qualities of American society itself. The saying that Israel cannot be both a democratic country and a Jewish country I think applies to America just as well. America cannot be both a Christian Nation and a democratic nation.

Whether we like it or not, America was founded by religious fundamentalists fleeing England. The reason the Puritans and Pilgrims left England was because the Anglican national Church in England wasn’t strict enough for them. The people who came here to New England primarily were religious fundamentalists in every sense of the word. A big part of their belief system was the restoration of the Jews to their homeland. There was even a proposal that Hebrew should be the national language of the American colonies. Hebrew was studied in all of the famous New England colleges like Harvard and Yale which originally were Bible colleges.

I think the Republican efforts to roll back voting rights as being essentially an effort to disenfranchise non-Christian fundamentalist voters. America is struggling with the exact problem that Israel faces: how to be both a democracy and yet to preserve its fundamentalist Christian core identity, just as Israel struggles about preserving its Jewish core identity. Both countries are in an identical predicament. And that’s why Israel provokes so much anger on this website and so many others because they hold a mirror up in front of us to see the ugliest aspects of America.

From all the years I lived in Israel I witnessed how Israelis are experts at taunting other countries with their worst behavior and then saying “How dare you criticize us.” Right now Netanyahu could easily say “America dropped nuclear bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, totally civilian targets that were no threat to the United States whatsoever, simply in an effort to end the war quickly. My point is: U.S. nuclear weapons could not be used on Germany because Germany had already surrendered before the bombs were ready. This may or may not have been a great disappointment to the weapons development team*, but the Truman administration, as you have well noted, saw a tremendous opportunity to use the bombs which had been developed for use against the German Reich to scare the Russians.

This is nothing new. There are numerous photos from the Israeli invasion of Lebanon, many years ago, which depict clearly marked ambulances with holes blown in their roofs by the Israeli Air Force.

And of course, there is the infamous machine gunning of the life rafts of American sailors in the case of the U.S.S. Liberty.

There was an unfortunate ideology which took hold amongst some powerful elements amongst the elites and hangers on of England and the US called ‘British Israelism’, which was the absurd belief that the Anglo-Saxons were of the ‘Lost Tribes of Israel’. The devil is in the details. Opinions swing wildly as to how the actual deal is structured. For instance, the Palestinians decisively reject a deal where the Israeli settlements are left in place, and some ‘land swaps’ are given in return.

This of course is nothing but a bunch of small Palestinian Bantustans whose territory is completely discontiguous, while those extensive Israeli settlements and their access roads remain as part of Israeli rule.

Naturally this is unacceptable.

Another question is the status of refugees that were forced out at the very beginning in 1948.

What neither Israel, nor its backer the US has ever offered is exactly what I mentioned previously: to pull back right to the 1967 borders and REMOVE the settlements. That question has never been put to the Palestinians by any poll, because everyone knows that Israel will never entertain this.

What the Palestinians mean by ‘one-state’ is very different from what the Israelis mean. In the Palestinian version all of the Palestinian refugees and land title holders would be restored. That would be the end of the ‘Jewishness’ of the Jewish state.

This is a kind of hard line that has formed in Palestinian public opinion, in response to the fact that the Israelis have never, and will probably never, offer to fully withdraw from the occupied territories and allow that desirable two-state solution—but will only consider land swaps and such non-starters.

The main culprit here is the US. If the US were to align with the other four major powers in the UNSC and deliver a resolution firmly spelling out complete Israeli withdrawal—there are already such UNSC Resolutions on the books—then Israel would have to negotiate in good faith, and a two-state solution based on the strict 1967 borders plus removal of settlers would be a reality.

Certainly Jewish power in the US is a factor, although It is also possible that the real shot-callers in the US, what some might call the ‘deep state,’ are not under any kind of Jewish control and could in fact turn on a dime.

Pepe Escobar in a piece that is up on this website right now, has a discussion with an alleged source within that deep establishment, who dismisses Kissinger and Brzezinski as mere ‘messenger boys’ for the real shot-callers.

I have heard similar interesting accounts about the deep establishment in the Soviet/Russian side—and the fact is no one can really say who is truly in control, and if they are even visible at all.

We saw during Trump’s term that he was basically powerless—and that remarkable ‘anonymous’ NYT op-ed that came out bragging about how they ‘correct’ his ‘worst impulses’, and calling themselves ‘the steady state.’

If that is really how things work, then those folks are still willing to back Israel right now, but at some point if they change their mind, Jewish power in finance and media is not going to make much difference. I don’t think there is much Jewish power in the military-security apparatus.

WHY ISRAEL AND AMERICA ARE EXACTLY IDENTICAL

I’ve often thought, if a person wants insight into Israel, study the Anglo-Saxon United States. Similarly, if a person wants insight into the A-S United States, study the Jewish state of Israel.

This book was eye-opening and invaluable. The author is an atheistic British female journalist who spent a lot of time traveling and visiting with prominent Christian Zionist leaders. The first part of the book deals with the historical perspective going back into the 1600s as I recall. She reports that Queen Victoria already in the mid-19th century envisioned a restored Jewish homeland in Palestine that would be allied with the British Empire. Her views were shared by many prominent members of the British aristocracy. Some American leaders also shared this perspective.

I am hardly an apologist for Israel, and I haven’t been following the recent events closely, but this struck me as odd:

This person was a friend of mine back in my Jerusalem Yeshiva days. He is English – his father was Jewish but mother Christian – so he ended up doing a formal conversion to Judaism. His father was some kind of high level person in the British government but I don’t remember what. When I left Israel in 2005, I remember telling the security guard in the airport that Israelis should remember that without American and German Christian support Israel would be a rotten piece of wood floating in the

Yes. I was born in America. Both my parents were born in America but their parents immigrated here from Russia and Austria.

I was brought up in California in a real melting pot. My father was a Stanford professor. We lived on campus in faculty housing. Most of my friends were children of a Jewish father professor who married a Christian mother. Only one of my friends had any Jewish identity at all. All the others celebrated Christian holidays and had almost zero Jewish identity.

I went to college back east at Harvard. It was a terrible experience. I encountered a lot of racism and cultural and ethnic identity clashes. At that time Harvard was 1/3 Jewish students and about 50% Jewish faculty. Yet the atmosphere among the Jews on campus was one of paranoia insecurity and victimization. I really hated it.

I visited Israel in the summer after my sophomore year on a college student trip. We worked on a kibbutz for a month and then traveled around the country for 3 weeks. It was a great experience because Israelis have a positive and confident attitude unlike all the Jews that I met at Harvard.

After I graduated I moved back to Israel and planned on simply becoming Israeli. But unexpectedly I met some Orthodox Jews who were recruiting for one of their Yeshiva programs.

I moved to Israel in 1982 after the invasion of Lebanon. The atmosphere was really bad. Lebanon was like Israel’s vietnam. The secular Israelis hated the Begin government. But the Orthodox Jews I met were full of confidence and I was attracted to that so I got into their movement. I stayed in that movement for 18 years until I met some Christian missionaries from South Africa who were working in Israel and I was baptized in the year 2000.

Since that time and especially when I returned to the States in 2006, I’ve come to see that the American evangelicals are the big force behind Israel’s militarism and disrespect for Arabs. I think the American evangelicals are far more violent and lovers of what is called “redemptive violence” than the Jews in Israel are.

Before my baptism I once met a large group of American Christian tourists in Jerusalem. They asked me how life was in Israel. I tried to tell them that it was pretty horrible with constant violence and tremendous dissension among the different Jewish groups. One of the men put his arm around my shoulder and smiled at me and said “Well you just have to suffer for your role in the redemption.” And he walked off with his friends to get on to their luxury tour bus.

I think the evangelicals are using the Israelis to promote the confrontation with Islam. I think it’s a very cynical ugly and insincere relationship.

Yes you are correct about the evangelical supporters of Israel. The mainline Protestant groups are much less vocal in their support. I think Southern Baptist and Evangelical are pretty much interchangeable terms these days.

The mainstream Protestant groups like Methodists and Lutherans give Israel passive assent. Virtually all of American Christianity has been co-opted into a pro Israel stance. This could be for a number of reasons but prominent is simply the influential role of Jews in American society and their high visibility which makes Christians reflexively supportive of them. And the success of the Jews and right wing white nationalists to marginalize and demonize Muslims.

Today you even have Catholics for Israel, a huge reversal from the Catholic Church’s traditional opposition to Zionism, which I think was connected to the fact that most Palestinian and Middle Eastern Christians are Maronite Catholic. So today you have Palestinian Catholic bishops constantly complaining that the Vatican has abandoned them and turned a deaf ear to their plight in its embrace of Zionism.

I think a lot of this also is an economic conflict. The Israelis are perceived as an affluent sophisticated society but the Palestinians as a low class impoverished struggling community. (Fran Taubman’s sophisticated and expensive artistic creations in Manhattan certainly pander to the economic elites and not to simple people like Palestinian peasants. And who knows how much of that reality of simple economic self-interest colors and informs her scathing attitude against the Palestinians.) And unfortunately American society caters to economic elitism and snobbishness.

The Christian tourists who go to Israel are carefully shielded from seeing any of the Palestinian areas and from hearing their narrative. It is very similar to the American cruise ships that go through the Caribbean islands disgorging tourists at various swanky shopping areas and completely ignoring the desperate poverty on 90% of the islands. It’s the exact same mentality of economic elitism arrogance and snobbishness.

1. Some years ago I read a claim that Israel Shamir is a Russian intelligence asset embedded into Israeli society. The pictures I’ve seen of him do not look like a normal Jew, neither European nor Middle Eastern. He is swarthy with a fleshly face that looks more like a Turk than any Jew I have ever met.

2. Under Trump we saw a fusion of the interests of white nationalists with Zionism. I assumed that the mentality was since white nationalists hate Islam and hate Muslims then it was logical to support Zionism and it’s confrontation with Islam. I don’t know if white nationalists oppose Islam because of its religion or because of the skin color of most of its adherence. Their attitude never made much sense to me. But I do see on this thread people who obviously have white nationalist sympathies who are now supporting the Palestinians who are majority Muslim. And I don’t understand why.

3. So I wonder is white nationalist opposition to Islam only in white societies like America and Europe but you believe the Muslims should be allowed to control their own destinies in their homelands in the Middle East? In other words is white nationalism an anti-colonialist movement? In the past a white nationalist sense of cultural superiority has been used to justify colonialism. But your version of it today seems very different. You seem to advocate that each society should be allowed to master its own destiny without outside interference.

4. So for example do you oppose Zionism because you see it as a colonial intrusion into a part of the world where Muslims should be allowed to control their own lives? I assume all the white nationalists on this thread would not want to live in Muslim societies and you oppose Muslim immigration to America and Europe. When I lived in South Africa I met Ilana’s father, Rabbi Ben Isaacson. He told me Ilana married a white South African Christian rock musician and was disowned by her family. I don’t know if she is still married to this person. I don’t know if she has ever officially embraced Christianity. I sense that she is an extremely conflicted person. I believe her estrangement from her rabbi father deeply pains her.

Shamir does not practice Judaism at all. He is a member of the Russian Orthodox Church I believe.

From where I sit in SoCal, large number of these “Evangelicals” have bought in to the so-called “prosperity Gospel, ” having chosen to forget the bit about a camel passing through the eye of the needle. They are tuned in to radio station WIFM (What’s In it For Me) and are hoping to win the giveaway for an “express ticket” to Heaven, where the streets are paved with gold for their benefit.

I call such people “phony Christians,” and SoCal is infested with such folk.

The real Christians, in my experience, do not talk about it. They live their lives according to their convictions, without wishing or expecting tangible rewards or recogniti0n. They “walk the talk,” in other words.

Thank you for your compliment and trying to encourage me. However I do not believe that the people on this thread are stupid at all. I think they’re highly intelligent, well informed, skeptical of conventional wisdom, and willing to go against the grain. I actually respect all of those things.

Because they are so passionate about their ideas, which I think derives from a real sense of fear about the dangers we are facing, I think they are inconsistent about some of their viewpoints. And I’m trying to help unravel these inconsistencies for their benefit and mine.

For example if they want to argue that white nationalism is an anti-colonialist movement — as when President Trump told the Saudis that he doesn’t care what they do in their own country and he will not try to interfere — how does this square with the fact that whites are here in North America because of a European colonial invasion?

Another inconsistency: If they want to be Holocaust deniers or revisionists, can they at least admit that Hitler wanted Europe to be Jüdenrein and he cooperated with the Transfer Agreement to relocate German Jews to Palestine? (And he did this despite the fact that Nazi Germany was far from an anti-Muslim society. Many Germans deeply admired Arab culture and Islam. And even so they were happy and eager to force German Jews to emigrate and create an independent enclave in Palestine.)

Another inconsistency: they wish to create a unified homogeneous American white Christian culture but they mock and deride Israeli efforts to create a unified and homogeneous Jewish culture in their country.

And finally this one: I would suggest that Israel is much more racially and ethnically diverse even with Zionism than American white nationalism is. Because the Jewish ingathering to Israel encompasses races and ethnic groups from almost every country on Earth and is far more diverse than the white Christian society idealized by the American white nationalists here.

Actually the Christian tourists have very little say about their itinerary. They are literally shepherded by Israeli appointed tour guides who work in close association with the pastors and church leadership to go on carefully selected tour routes that avoid any contact with Palestinians.

A friend who went on such a tour told me that when they were having supper at a restaurant and she tried to discuss with the Palestinian waiter about his community’s situation in Israel, she was quickly shut down by her own church leader and the Israeli tour guide and was shamed into silence.

So the individual Christian tourists are victims of a much larger operation designed to keep them in the dark and completely desensitized to the Palestinian plight.

I believe that organizing a Christian boycott of tourism to Israel would be far more effective than the BDS movement. I frankly am surprised that nobody has ever considered it. Personally I avoid buying Israeli products and have done so for at least the last 10 years. At Passover time, when I usually buy a box of matzo and some grape juice, I make sure to buy products produced in the US and not in Israel. But compared to the economic value of Christian tourism to Israel, these kinds of economic boycotts are a drop in the ocean and I suspect barely impact the Israeli economy.

I have read that next to arms sales Christian tourism is the second biggest element of the Israeli economy. I can assure you that a total Christian boycott of tourism to Israel would have a devastating impact on their society. It also would help to generate important conversations inside the churches. 50 million American evangelicals carry substantial weight both economically and politically. I think the key to changing the dynamic in Israel is to wake up this community and to galvanize them. It’s not easy because their pastors are often in bed with Israeli tour operators and other functionaries. But it should at least be a goal.

I went to college back east at Harvard. It was a terrible experience. I encountered a lot of racism and cultural and ethnic identity clashes. At that time Harvard was 1/3 Jewish students and about 50% Jewish faculty. Yet the atmosphere among the Jews on campus was one of paranoia insecurity and victimization. I really hated it.

Sorry to hear of your negative experience. I spent my undergraduate years at the other institution in Cambridge, MA (S.B. in 1970), and had no personal experience of anything like what you have described. The ‘tute, like all “elite” schools, can, and does, pick its students from (extremely) well qualified applicants from all over the world.

My own experience, FWIW, is that among intelligent, educated people, nobody gives a damn where you came from, or who your mommy and daddy were. They want to know what you think, and have no patience with petty prejudice or petty bickering.

Michael and his wife are devout Christians, who “walk the talk.” Through a series of strange coincidences, Mike has spent a significant amount of time in Pakistan, doing humanitarian work. He tells me his Pakistani Muslim friends are like a second family to him, and, yes, he has read the Koran (in English translation), so as he puts it, there is no BSing him about what is in it.

“Well you just have to suffer for your role in the redemption.” And he walked off with his friends to get on to their luxury tour bus.

Sounds typical. These deranged folks are praying for the world to end, strange as that may sound.

I forgot to mention this important factor. Most of the traditional Christian tour sites in Bethlehem and Nazareth that are located in Palestinian areas are Catholic and often are deliberately avoided by the Christian Zionists, who are Protestants. Many of these tours don’t even go to these historic Christian sites at all but have their own Christian Zionist locations that are much more acceptable to their Israeli tour guides and hosts. It is all very convoluted and insidious. The Palestinians have overwhelming forces arrayed against them and I truly do not pity their predicament.

Yes to both of your comments. This is a pretty bad slip up. I was weighing in my mind whether to write I pity their predicament or I don’t envy their predicament and it came out wrong.

Back in the mid 1990s I was hospitalized in Jerusalem for about a month. All the doctors were Russian Jewish immigrants and all of the nursing staff were male Palestinians. It was the first time I’d ever been around Palestinians and I talked to them about their lives and their religion. I was very surprised to learn how similar their practices are as Muslims to Judaism. It really made me start pondering their situation for the first time in my life.

The Palestinians are forced to learn Hebrew and follow the Jewish religious calendar simply in order to work for Israeli Jews. But Jews know almost nothing about Palestinian culture, about Islam, or their Arabic language. They are terrible snobs condescending at best and brutal at worst to the Palestinians.

In Israel only Saturday is a day off. There is no 2-day weekend because the Orthodox Jewish politicians are adamant that Sunday is an accursed Christian day that Jews should not honor in any way shape or form. Most secular Israelis would love to have a two-day weekend like in the West but the Jewish jihadist politicians veto that option.

One of the reasons there are such fierce battles about Sabbath observance in Israel is because the secular Jews use Saturday to do shopping and other kinds of family activities that can only be done on this one day off in the week. It isn’t so much that they oppose the religious ceremonies but that they simply don’t have the freedom to indulge. Orthodox Jews in America are privileged to be able to piggyback the Christian Sunday. So even though they close down their businesses on Saturday they’re able to operate full scale on Sunday because America has repealed most of its blue law Sunday restrictions. They also can use Sunday as a regular weekend holiday. But Israelis don’t have this option. They only have one day off a week and the seculars are not going to allow the Orthodox to hijack that experience. If they want to go to the beach with their families or go to a movie theater or to a restaurant or to a park or zoo they will not allow the Orthodox to veto these options.

I explained all this in order to say that after I was baptized I really struggled to know what to do on Saturday. Most of Jerusalem where I was living is shut down on Saturday and there’s nothing to do. I would go to the Old City and find a Muslim internet cafe that I could use. I also would go to an Arab Christian coffee shop where I could have coffee or a beer. I did everything possible to avoid the Jewish part of the Old City. I couldn’t stand being around them or near the Western wall where they would come with all of their arrogance belligerence and privilege, sneering at everyone else around them.

I also spent a lot of time in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, especially in the Greek Orthodox section. Greek Orthodox priests wear beards and look a lot more like Orthodox rabbis than their Catholic counterparts do who are almost always clean shaven. The Greek Orthodox section has the magnificent Dome with the icons painted on it. So during that year of 2005 I spent a lot of time in the Arab parts of Jerusalem and that increased my awareness of their circumstances and my sense of sympathy for them.

Most of the so-called Messianic congregations in Israel, Jews who believe in Jesus, are fiercely Zionistic and express almost zero empathy for the Palestinians. They completely Buy into the Netanyahu right wing agenda. There is one group that is an exception, but in general the Messianics are anxious to minimize the stigma with which Israelis view them because of their belief in Jesus and they tend to overcompensate as radical right-wing militant Zionists. They completely support the IDF and I never once in any of the many Messianic congregations I attended heard a single word of sympathy or even understanding about the plight of the Palestinians.

I once met a Greek Orthodox American woman from Boston who had married a Palestinian Christian. They lived in a village not far from Jerusalem which is Christian and produces a famous Palestinian beer. I met her at a Christian bookstore in Jerusalem and she told me how difficult it is to try to run a business in occupied Palestine.

If I could snap my fingers and have a magical solution, I would move all the Palestinians out of Israel and resettle them in America or Europe or anywhere else. I’m a lot happier after I left there and my plight was infinitely less difficult than theirs.

I’m sure they could all be evacuated and resettled at a fraction of the cost of all the wars and military aid that we are forced to pay to the Israelis. I guess the American MIC opposes that idea because as I have written military aid to Israel means the MIC gets the money and the Israelis get the products.

My father was at the Stanford medical school. He was an MD PhD who was involved in the explosion of genetic research that has led to recombinant DNA technologies. Some of his students went to work for Monsanto and he’s a big advocate of the covid vaccine. He is very intolerant of anti-vaxxers and believes that they are grave threat to society. (They certainly are a grave threat to the pharmaceutical industry!)

He’s very smart but also somewhat naive. I have shared many conspiracy theory views with him and he not only rejects them but he won’t even consider them for 5 minutes. He told me once did he was at a big convention and had dinner with the president of Merck or one of the pharmaceutical companies. This CEO confided in my father that a lot of the drugs that they sell are worthless and simply are sold to hold up the company’s bottom line and my father acted like he was surprised and this was a great Revelation to him. I don’t understand why he would be surprised at what so many people suspect anyway!

Jewish people are very smart and talented but they also tend to be extremely narrowly focused. They trust the establishment to work and they’re deeply afraid of conspiracy theories because that undermines the trust that they need to operate in this society. There aren’t really any Jewish Renaissance men who have a lot of knowledge about a lot of different things. They tend to be extremely expert in a very narrow field and then they trust the other experts to be honest.

My uncle also was at Stanford and ran the linear accelerator. He received a Nobel prize in nuclear physics in the 1970s. He shared it with a professor Ting at MIT if you recall. My uncle also attended MIT as an undergrad as one of the few Jews at that time. About your experiences there, Harvard I think has a much bigger Jewish presence than MIT, both among students and faculty. The neocon Jews would go to a place like Harvard and not MIT.

I have to retract my comment that there are no Jewish Renaissance men in the world anymore. First of all I guess Ron Unz himself is something of a renaissance man because he has to know an awful lot about so many different topics that are covered on the UNZ Review.

Also, I guess it’s no coincidence that he was a venture capitalist because I wanted to add that Jewish bankers and venture capitalists, who are so hated on this thread, also are Renaissance men because they have to understand all the different fields and technologies that they invest their money into.

We all like to talk about conspiracy theories here and spying is intimately involved with these ideas. I was once reflecting on why spy novels always have lurid sex scenes in them, along with James Bond movies and things of that nature. Interestingly back in the Book of Genesis when Joseph’s brothers come to Egypt seeking to buy bread and unknowingly confront their missing brother, who now is the prime minister of Egypt, he accuses them of spying on Egypt. And the expression used in the Hebrew is “You’ve come to reveal the genitals of Egypt”. So here we see an explicit connection between spying and sex.

I mentioned Victor Ostrovski once. He used to have a website where he displayed all of the bizarre paintings he had in his Phoenix Arizona art gallery. They all had a spy theme associated with them and almost all of them had subtly lurid sexual themes as well. So I was wondering about this connection between spying and sex. And I had the following idea that I put before all of you since the people on this thread are intelligent and also very much into conspiracies and espionage and things like that.

I think the common denominator between spying and sex is information. A spy is trying to steal information from one society or culture and transfer it to another surreptitiously. What does this have to do with sex? Well at its most basic biological level, sex involves the exchange of information. The male injects his DNA into the female and her DNA recombines with his to produce a new life form. I thought maybe the Creator has designed sex to be so pleasurable as a way to induce us to exchange this information.

Then I thought about the teaching profession. People who are teachers or even pastors report a tremendous sense of pleasure in being able to convey the information they have successfully to students parishioners and so forth. Almost everything we do in life involves the exchange of information. When we read articles on a website like this one, or read newspapers and magazines, we are absorbing information. I think the human brain is designed to crave the acquisition of new information.

Catholic celibacy is controversial, but Catholic priests are very much involved in conveying information, teachings, encouragement, and spiritual exhortation to large numbers of people. I once heard a Catholic priest on EWTN Catholic television explain that a celibate priest isn’t so much giving up sex as he is being liberated to have a higher and more valuable kind of relationship with his congregation and community. (I realize that is speaking idealistically and please do not make snide comments about this here!)

I suppose if a regular teaching or ministerial sort of job could be compared to a marriage, then a spy is more like a seducer, an adulterer, or even a rapist, extracting information under false pretenses. And we all know how exciting sexual sin and pornography can be. I think this is part of the allure behind the espionage business: acquiring and exchanging information deviously. It is like date rape.

This article appeared in the New York Times today about the plummeting birth rates around the world. Some demographers are forecasting China’s population to Fall by 50% by the end of the century. This trend is occurring all over the world except for sub-Saharan Africa. According to the article Nigeria may eventually have a larger population than China.

As I’ve become accustomed to seeing in the New York Times, the key reason is hidden at the very end of the article and almost mentioned in passing. Namely the dismal economic opportunities available to young people which discourage them from marrying and raising a family. Things like low wages, job insecurity, and so forth that all have severely impacted human fertility rates. That topic is worthy of an article on its own but the New York Times consigns it to a single short paragraph at the very end of this article. It seems typical for this newspaper that bottom line, despite its reputation as a far left liberal media rag, is an apologist for the American capitalist system headquartered in its hometown of NYC.

But I think there may be another factor to plummeting fertility rates: namely the proliferation of the internet and the information superhighway across the globe. On Friday night I had a WhatsApp video conversation with a person in New Guinea. This person lives on an island in the South Pacific 200 mi off the coast of New Guinea. I have no idea what kind of internet technology is available to them, but our video link was perfect completely uninterrupted as though we were talking across town here in the US. I was pretty amazed.

I think it’s very possible that the internet and the acquisition of information it offers is more pleasurable to people than sex itself. I would be willing to wager that the rapid growth of internet usage and things like Facebook social media and so forth is driving fertility rates down because people find that the pleasure associated with information exchange is far greater than that which comes from sex.

I’d also be willing to bet that the readers and followers of the UR have experienced this phenomenon in their own lives. It simply confirms what I have suspected for a number of years: that the root basis of sexual pleasure is the exchange of information and there are higher and more subtle forms of this exchange, such as the internet, that exceed the pleasure associated with sex, supplant it, and now are driving plummeting fertility rates across the globe.

Although the New York Times article doesn’t go into this, I suspect that the reason sub-Saharan Africa still has high fertility rates is that internet usage is much lower there than anywhere else in the world on a per capita basis.

Bottom line is someone like Fran finds it more pleasurable to argue and fight with the people on this thread than she does to have sex. And that inadvertent celibacy increases her sense of anger and frustration driving a vicious cycle of anger and confrontation.

On another note entirely, I have wondered if the best way to reduce the risk of war is for the US to manufacture and give nuclear weapons to every country on earth. Since nobody wants to actually use these weapons then perhaps the best way to guarantee a peaceful future is to make sure every nation has them available. Imagine the economic boom for the US to sell nuclear weapons to 200 Nations on earth. I’m frankly surprised Trump didn’t propose such a scheme.

It seems clear that North Korea’s possession of nukes has saved it from an American invasion. I wouldn’t blame the Iranians for wanting to acquire nukes at all. And I think if they had them it actually would make war between Iran and Israel less likely. The old doctrine of Mutual Assured Destruction.

So if the whole world were armed to the teeth with nuclear phallic symbols, people might actually set War aside and make Love instead. Amen
