About Veeptopus
Veeptopus - Unique art for the octopus enthusiast, history buff and general weirdo in your life.
So I drew portraits of all 47 U.S. vice presidents with octopuses on their heads. Your first thought will surely be something like, “Why in God’s name did you do this?”
It’s Walter Mondale’s fault.
Mondale was the first veep of whom I was ever aware. I was 5, flipping through a copy of Newsweek with Mondale sheepishly standing behind Jimmy Carter on the cover. “What does a vice president do?” I asked my mom. “Go to funerals, mostly,” she said. This seemed impossible. How could the No. 2 guy in America just go to funerals?
The Constitution, it turns out, is surprisingly vague on the veep’s actual responsibilities. Vice President Charles Dawes, a man of great ambition and ability — he won a Nobel Peace Prize and wrote a No. 1 pop hit — summed up the job like this: “I can do only two things here [in the Senate]. One of them is to sit up here on this rostrum and listen to you birds talk without the ability to reply. The other is to look at the newspapers every morning to see how the president’s health is.”
Vice presidents, in short, struggle to make sense of a poorly defined role, all the while waiting for death. It’s a bit like life itself.
Decades after I first learned about Walter Mondale, a friend of mine invited me to participate in “From Dusk ’Til Drawn,” a fundraiser for the Museum of Contemporary Art in Santa Barbara, California, that entailed drawing for 24 hours straight. At that point in my life — i.e., before children — sleep deprivation was actually something of a novelty. It sounded insane. I was in. The last thing I wanted, however, was to be casting about at 4 in the morning for an idea of what to draw. So I decided to do portraits of all 47 American vice presidents. I added the octopuses because I thought they were funny.
I quickly discovered that there is some unlikely alchemy that happens when cephalopods are added to elected officials. People not only liked my work, but wanted to decorate their houses and offices with them. So I opened this Veeptopus etsy site.
Veeptopus has been featured in such websites as Boingboing, Huffington Post, i09, Laughing Squid, Fast Company and NPR's Studio 360. (If you want to see links, check out the press page on my site: http://www.jonathan-crow.com/press/)
I'm rapidly expanding my line to include pictures of badgers, presidents and Donald Trump. More weird and wonderful things to come.
So thanks for stopping by. Take a look around and please drop me a line if you have any questions.
Cheers
