Just a hoot and a holler...

... but without actual hooting and hollering. What I have come to enjoy about this show (besides the humor) is the minutia within the minutia. My first exposure to JJHo was live aboard the JoCo cruise. I don’t know if that is an actual episode, but still! I forgot about it for quite a while but somehow remembered/stumbled across it and have been bingeing ever since. Even joined in on the Max Fun Drive at the poor-man level.

Oddly, I think my favorite thing is the sound of chairs scraping the floor when everyone rises/is seated.

I love this show despite Jesse Thorn

This is an excellent show if you can train yourself to recognize the moment (which occurs at least every other episode) when Jesse Thorn starts to smugly assert his white hipster expertise on hip hop and Mexican culture. If you hit the fast forward button quickly enough and skip ahead until you stop hearing “al pastor” and “De La Soul” pronounced with maximum self-satisfied unctuousness, you can probably manage to enjoy the show. Also, both Thorn and John Hodgman never met a name drop they didn’t like.

People being nice to each other about low-stakes things

I came to the show for Hodgman’s erudition and absurdist humor, and this show has that. However, what has kept me listening for 10 years is the heart. John and Jesse really care about the people who write in and want the best for them. The jokes are good-natured, and the findings are sometimes silly but always insightful. This show should join the Great British Baking Show and The Repair Shop on your watching and listening list for when you’re sick of everyone being mean.
