But Michigan State University may be behind in the race to make its athletics department environmentally sustainable. Big Ten rivals Ohio State University and University of Michigan have established zero waste plans for their large sporting events and tailgates — diverting 90% of waste from landfills by recycling, repurposing and composting — while the Spartans lack an athletics-wide sustainability action plan.
Coaching diversity isn’t just an equity issue, it also can be a competitive issue for college athletics, said Allen Trieu, a Midwest recruiting analyst at 247Sports. Prospective student-athletes prioritize diversity when deciding which colleges to attend.

A growing number of Michigan high schools are getting in on the fun of esports. More than 50 high schools are registered with the Michigan High School Esports Federation, a free, nonprofit league created by Michigan educators in 2019. They join over 170 U.S. colleges and universities with varsity esports programs – including 18 in Michigan.
