The protests focused on demands for liberty in Cuba, calling for the administration to support Cuban freedom through government pressure.

Many of the demonstrators present were of Cuban descent and arrived at the White House gates after taking the journey up from Florida, the Miami Herald reported. Those in the crowd voiced that the unrest in Cuba does not just stem from lack of medical supplies but a lack of freedom.

Protests in Cuba erupted on July 11 in response to the island nation's Communist regime's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. Cuban citizens posted messages to social media criticizing the government for what they perceive to be a focus on investment in tourism over medical care.

Republicans joined the protest in support, Representatives Mario Diaz-Balart, Maria Elvira Salazar, Carlos Gimenez, Dan Crenshaw, Nicole Malliotakis, Michael McCaul, Michael Waltz and Victoria Spartz, the Miami Herald reported. Florida Senator Rick Scott was also present and has issued the following statements in regard to the issue.

"The Communist Cuban regime is shaking with fear as the people rise up to denounce the oppressive communist rule that has brought ruin to their nation for more than 60 years," he said in a statement on his website. "I stand proudly with the heroic freedom fighters across Cuba that have taken to the streets determined to regain their freedom and put an end to the Castro dictatorship."
