That doesn’t mean we don’t have to work to make it happen. But it’s clearly visible in the possibility space, and quite a few people see it.

It’s technically possible for our online identities and relationships to belong to us the way an email address, phone contact book, or password keychain does. So I think it will happen, one way or another. It’s just a matter of time.

Idea for science fiction story: an elite squad of programmers who retain the lost art of how to manually build and debug systems, and get called in to deal with a botnet gaining sentience that the AI in the most popular IDE inserted into everyone’s code.

Future bugs from ML-augmented programming: - Model that sneaks a crypto mining botnet into your code because its training data was compromised. - Model that sneaks a “sentience subprocess? your code because…??? Idk, but this would be bad.

In the near future, the skills of digital art, web design, and most programming could become “knowing what text to feed the AI model and tweaking the resulting output?.

Fascinating thread from someone who was there in the early days

Twitter is important, but it's always been vulnerable as a company. When Twitter does something which upsets the community of users, it is often due to this vulnerability. Let me tell you a little known story about an earlier time a billionaire tried a hostile takeover of twitter

Centralization is high variance.
Quote Tweet
21. In governance, complete centralization seems to produce both the best and worst outcomes. Democracy exists because you cannot guarantee that there will always be wise kings, or that wise kings will always have perfect information.

Twitter is too important to be owned and controlled by a single person. The opposite should be happening. Twitter should be decentralized as a protocol that powers an ecosystem of communication products and services.

Power changes hands many times across centuries. It’s been a little over a decade since online social networks were created. We have to take the long view and think, “what if someone bad takes this over,? and build more resilient systems.

The reason a platform as important as Twitter should be a protocol is that someone buying the company, or any other crazy thing that could happen over the long course of history, shouldn’t disrupt this essential tool for human connection and social sense-making.

Tweets on a blockchain: seems easy, global db, right? But — *taps whiteboard* scaling is still a challenge, and do you really want a permanent record of that bad take kept on thousands of computers paid to keep it online forever? No.
Quote Tweet
Hypothetically, if you just ignored all concerns and yeeted a twitter onto a blockchain, you'd end up repeating 2021/22 with ethereum. It won't scale, people will end up paying $10-50 gas to tweet, and it's right back to crypto winter with you

Been asking people (about past ideas that didn’t work out) — what conditions would it need to succeed? Or are there inherent reasons it can’t?

“Replacing the fertility-sustaining processes in the soil with a dependence on external inputs has also made the soil ecosystem, and humans, vulnerable to interruptions in the supply of those inputs, for instance due to price shocks.? - 2013 We need more resilience.

How to allow edits while preserving history, and making sure people are commenting on the right version? Content addressing. Git does this. Make more consumer apps track state and provenance of content.
