Rather than debating counterfactuals (“what if Ukraine still had nukes?”), we should take the spirit of the treaty to heart by working to reduce nuclear dangers and ensuring that more states don’t decide to build their own nuclear weapons.

Beyond the technicalities of command and control, the Budapest Memorandum was monumental for nonproliferation: it reduced the number of states with nuclear weapons on their territory, and added momentum to reductions in the total number of nuclear weapons. A win for humanity.

Despite many claims that Ukraine would have been safer if it had kept those nukes, they were never truly Ukrainian weapons – the locks needed to operate them were in Moscow.

On May 21, 1996, the last Soviet nuclear warheads left Ukrainian soil. This made the world a safer place. 🚀🧵

North Korea this year scrapped a five-year moratorium on testing ballistic missiles. So far, it has not resumed testing nuclear bombs. But it is believed to be about to do that very soon.

Almost 1/4 of respondents believed there was NO workplace safety and incident reporting policy accessible to them. State & fed laws require these safety policies to exist, and therefore, these resources and policies could use more sunlight to protect students in their workspaces

Lastly, an example of a policy that is very much present at all schools (private or public) that was not as visible to grad students was Workplace Safety and Incidence Reporting. 🧪🥼❤️‍🩹

Mental health contd: 3�?�The limitation on # of visits was hard for students dealing with long-term issues The pandemic only made these issues worse and highlights the need for better mental health infrastructure at universities for graduate student-specific needs.

Mental health contd: 2�?�: 24% said that resources available to them for mental health care were limited with an equal amount mentioning that the number of visits was limited or that there was no long-term option available for care

Mental health was a complex topic in our survey with some main takeaways 1�?�: The respondents who had mental health policies available to them, 79% of all comments said that mental health care resources were somehow insufficient or inconvenient to access.

Sick leave was used by only 2.7% of respondents. Many comments revolved around where the student's funding came from, health insurance loss, or lapse in pay. “Federal grants often don't allow for any leave to be taken or any vacation allowance.”

We set out to map the landscape of how grad students used these resources and policies at their institutions to 1�?� Better understand WHICH policies/resources are used most often 2�?� Which ones needed change 3�?� Offer suggestions for ⬆️ awareness and use for grad students
