Careers at the General Secretariat of the Council

The Council Europa building

Welcome to the Council!

Working for the Council means being at the heart of EU decision-making.

The General Secretariat of the Council (GSC) is the body of staff responsible for assisting 2 EU institutions:

  • the European Council
  • the Council of the EU, including its presidencies, the Permanent Representatives Committee (Coreper) and the other Council committees and working parties

The GSC helps organise and ensure the coherence of the Council's work. It assists the European Council and its President and also supports the Council presidency in negotiations within the Council and with the other EU institutions.

Organising the European Council

Behind the scenes: the European Council

EU leaders meet as the European Council at least twice every 6 months - these meetings, often referred to as 'EU summits' are held in Brussels, in the Council's Europa building.

But what happens behind the scenes for the logistical and political preparations of a summit?

And how do we work together to make sure summits run smoothly, resulting in decisions that impact millions of lives?
