Throughout the summer, multi-city, in-person events and unique Web3 metaverse experiences will celebrate the spirited title characters and living leads of the new comedy. Each character will be honored with a distinctive "to die for" activation, bringing their individual worlds and stories into the here and now with a variety of in-person events, stunts and experiences. Fans will explore the lives (and afterlives) of the spirits, including Flower, a hippie from the '60s; Hetty, a Victorian society woman and wife of a 19th-century robber baron; Alberta, the saucy Prohibition-era lounge singer; Isaac, the 18th-century forgotten Founding Father; Sasappis, a sarcastic native from the 16th century; Pete, the upbeat '80s scout troop leader; Thorfinn, a Viking warrior from 1009; and Trevor, the slick, pantsless-for-eternity '90s finance bro. As of mid-summer, fans from anywhere can also bridge dimensions between the living and the dead by virtually accessing the haunted grounds of Woodstone Mansion in a unique and easy-to-navigate Web3 Ghosts experience. Fri-Yay: Are Network Sitcoms Back…Again?; More Details About Betty White NBC Special

It's time for another edition of Fri-Yay! That means we will take a look back on some sitcom happenings in recent days or weeks or other fun sitcomy stuff. It's a sitcom lover's paradise! Happy Fri-Yay!

Abbott Elementary

by Vincent

After a few off years, the network sitcom might be back. This season we have several solid new sitcoms garnering both critical acclaim and even solid viewership numbers. CBS's Ghosts, ABC's Abbott Elementary, and NBC's American Auto and Grand Crew are all really good sitcoms with the potential to grow into something even better. And all of these shows feel like the type of shows that still could only exist on network TV, which shows that - despite the fact that broadcast is a far less relevant medium than it was even 10 years ago - it may still be the place to be for sitcoms.

All of these sitcoms combine solid characters, quick joke writing and interesting premises. They may not have the experimentation of streaming or cable sitcoms, but sometimes, that just isn't what you want. You want a good, relaxing and funny sitcom to disappear into for a few episodes. And that's exactly what these shows prove network sitcoms can still provide.

Celebrating Betty White: America's Golden Girl

President Joe Biden, Drew Barrymore, Valerie Bertinelli, Cher, Bryan Cranston, Ted Danson, Ellen DeGeneres, Jimmy Fallon, Tina Fey, Ana Gasteyer, Goldie Hawn, Vicki Lawrence, Jane Leeves, Jay Leno, Anthony Mackie, Wendie Malick, Joel McHale, Tracy Morgan, Jean Smart, Mary Steenburgen and more will come together to pay tribute to the late actress and animal advocate in NBC's primetime special Celebrating Betty White: America's Golden Girl. The special airs Monday, Jan. 31 at 10 p.m. on NBC and will be available the next day on Peacock. Co-stars, friends, admirers and those who shared special moments with White recount their favorite memories and reveal untold stories to commemorate the life and legacy of the trailblazing television star. The telecast will include clips and never-before-seen footage that best capture White's irreverent tone, spirit and impeccable comedic timing that are a hallmark of her decades-long career.

The Wonder Years

Watching television shows has changed in the last few years, with most primetime series being watched not on TV, but on other devices (streaming services, network websites, etc). Viewers now like to binge a few episodes in a row and watch on their own time. This has become even more apparent this season. After 35 days of viewing across linear (TV, DVR, VOD) and digital platforms (Hulu, abc.com, etc), the series debut of ABC's The Wonder Years catapulted to a 2.56 rating among Adults 18-49, growing by nearly 4 times over its initial Live+Same Day television only rating and representing a +282% jump (0.67 rating to 2.56 rating). The Wonder Years soared to 8.0 million Total Viewers after 35 days of multiplatform viewing, marking an increase of +4.8 million viewers and a lift of +150% over its Live+Same Day television average (3.2 million to 8.0 million). With a 2.56 rating in delayed multiplatform viewing, the new comedy stood as ABC's highest-rated telecast of Premiere Week 2021-22 in Adults 18-49. The Wonder Years marked ABC's strongest new comedy debut in two years in both Total Viewers (8.0 million) and Adults 18-49 (2.56 rating) - since mixed-ish in September 2019.

Fri-Yay: Are Ghosts and The Wonder Years the Saving Graces of Network Comedy?; Ghosts Receives Full Season Order

It's time for another edition of Fri-Yay! That means we will take a look back on some sitcom happenings in recent days or weeks or other fun sitcomy stuff. It's a sitcom lover's paradise! Happy Fri-Yay!

The Wonder Years

by Vincent

It's no secret that broadcast comedy has been in a rough state for a few years. There really hasn't been a hit, either critically or commercially, in some time now. But this year, network TV has two sitcoms drawing solid reviews, some acclaim, and even decent ratings. Those shows are The Wonder Years on ABC, which has gotten strong reviews and is doing a respectable job of holding the audience of the rest of the evening, and Ghosts on CBS, which a lot of critics and fans have given very strong reviews to, and has also pulled in respectable numbers - particularly for a high concept sitcom, on CBS of all places. (Not typically known for their daring, high concept comedies.)

These shows aren't exactly, say, Cheers or Modern Family, which were massive hits that many say "saved" the sitcom genre in their time. But maybe in 2021, a well liked sitcom with respectable reviews is the closest we can get to those massive hits. Either way, I hope both shows continue to impress.

Ghosts

Speaking of Ghosts... CBS has given a full-season order to Ghosts for the 2021-2022 broadcast season. The CBS Original series premiered Thursday, Oct. 7 with a special one-hour debut. In Live+7, its debut has the largest lift of all new and returning comedy premieres this season, adding +2.2 million viewers, bringing total viewers to 7.76 million. Ghosts airs Thursdays (9:00-9:30 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network, and is available to stream live and on demand on Paramount+.

Ghosts is a single-camera comedy starring Rose McIver and Utkarsh Ambudkar as Samantha and Jay, a cheerful freelance journalist and up-and-coming chef from the city, respectively, who throw both caution and money to the wind when they decide to convert a huge rundown country estate they inherited into a bed & breakfast - only to find it's inhabited by the many spirits of deceased residents who now call it home. The departed souls are a close-knit, eclectic group that includes a saucy Prohibition-era lounge singer (Danielle Pinnock); a pompous 1700s militiaman (Brandon Scott Jones); a '60s hippie fond of hallucinogens (Sheila Carrasco); an overly upbeat '80s scout troop leader (Richie Moriarty); a cod-obsessed Viking explorer from 1009 (Devon Chandler Long); a slick '90s finance bro (Asher Grodman); a sarcastic and witty native from the 1500s (Román Zaragoza); and a society woman and wife of an 1800s robber baron who is Samantha's ancestor (Rebecca Wisocky), to name a few. If the spirits were anxious about the commotion a renovation and B&B; will create in their home, it's nothing compared to when they realize Samantha is the first live person who can see and hear them.
