Neha Vandhana Vijay will be putting her dream into practice after she graduates from the Fiji National University’s (FNU) College of Medicine, Nursing, and Health Sciences (CMNHS) tomorrow.

Vijay will graduate with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS).

The 23-year-old, who lives with her mother and grandparents in Rakiraki, said it was her childhood dream to become a doctor.

“The dream of becoming a doctor was acquired in my late childhood. I realised how noble and fulfilling the profession would be as I would be able to help someone recover from ailments and make them feel better,” she said.

“I want to be a good doctor in the future so I can do the best for most, starting off by being able to take care of my loved ones.”

“It is a proud moment for me to finally become a doctor and serve my people. The journey was not easy for me as there were many highs and lows of emotions along with a lot of challenges, and the effect of the lockdown period during COVID-19 affected everyone’s mental health and wellbeing. However, we managed to overcome this with the help of FNU staff and teachers through fun virtual modalities of learning.”

“Another challenge I overcame was attending my online classes and keeping my grandparents safe from COVID, especially when they had yet to receive the second dose.  I lost my dear uncle to COVID-19 in 2021, and I only wish I was out in the field serving my people during times of need. After I graduate, I will be able to do so.”

“My grandparents are now so happy with my achievement. It is a proud moment to see the smiles on their faces, as they motivated me whenever I faced hardships and difficulties.”

“With the six years I spent in medical school at FNU, it has helped me grow out of my shell and open up to be able to offer the best I can to the community.”

Vijay said FNU and its highly qualified lecturers and tutors helped guide her learning experience and provided her with the knowledge and practical experience that were necessary for a competent medical doctor.

“Being away from home and my loved ones for most parts of the year wasn’t easy; however, I was determined to achieve my goals, which I will finally accomplish tomorrow by holding my certificate of qualification.”
