Holy Cross Church, Boultham

Boultham is an inner-city area of Lincoln in Lincolnshire, England. The population of the City of Lincoln ward at the 2021 census was 11,258 this included the areas of New Boultham and Swanpool Garden Suburb.[1]

The ecclesiastical parish of Boultham covers most of Lincoln west of the River Witham near Lincoln High Street and part of Lincoln City Centre. The northern boundary is defined by Brayford Pool and the Fossdyke as far as Carholme Golf Course. The district includes the suburbs of Hartsholme, New Boultham and Swanpool. Tritton Road runs through the centre of Boultham.

The grade II* listed St Helen's Church is used for occasional service and the newer building of Holy Cross church is used for routine worship, within the Anglican Boultham Parish.[2]

As at 2011, the Boultham ward on Lincoln City Council is represented by three Labour Party councillors; the ward on Lincolnshire County Council by one Labour councillor.

The area is home to Lincoln Central Mosque and Cultural Centre and multiple retail parks.

Boultham had a population of 11,258 at the 2021 Census, it recorded the ethnic makeup of the district at: 87% White British, 6% Asian, 2% Black, 2% Mixed Race, 1% Arab and 1% Other Ethnics. Overall, this made Boultham 87% White and 13% Ethnic Minorities. The religious makeup of the district was 55% Irreligious, 40% Christian, 3% Muslim, 1% Hindu, 1% Other Religion and less than 1% Sikh making the overall district population 55% Non-religious and 45% Religious.[3] The age range living in the district was mostly 18-64 years old, followed by 0-17 years old and 65+ years old. Additionally, most of the districts population was born in the UK with 9,363 born in the country compared to the other residents where over 1,000 are from EU countries and 554 from Middle East and Asia countries. The districts gender is split with 5,855 females compared with 5,408 males. The area is home to many churches and a mosque. Notable churches include Holy Cross Church, St Helen's Church and Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Church.

Nature reserve

Boultham Mere, created in 1989, is a nature reserve situated near a railway line and looked after by the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust. It has a colony of Variable Damselfly.

History

In 1911 the civil parish had a population of 1028.[4] On 9 November 1920 the parish was abolished and merged with Lincoln.[5]
