It\rquote s Ingrid Owens here from www.camerashyclasses.com and www.beginnersphotographyblog.com. This week I\rquote m actually at home here in Ireland. As you can see from my background I got some lovely green grass and hills to prove it and a little gray sky that is not so good. Anyway that\rquote s what makes the grass green.\par \par Since I\rquote m at home here, I have the opportunity to get my hands on and show you the latest cameras that are out. So I thought that it will be a good time for us to talk about the bridge cameras. Actually what I have here with me tonight is the Nikon Coolpix P510. This is a bridge camera which means that It\rquote s not quite a Digital SLR and certainly not a compact camera either. So it\rquote s kind of a bridge between the two. The best thing about this particular camera is the optical zoom lens that comes with this camera. So the optical lens for this is a 42x optical zoom. If you can see that on the screen 42x optical zoom is a huge zoom lens. What I\rquote m going to do is actually do some test prints and so we will be able to post them below the video and you can get the idea on how actually close that will bring you up. Let me tell you if you are going to put up this type of lens on a digital SLR it will be a massive zoom lens. So this of course is one of the best thing about having and using a super zoom cameras as opposed to a Digital SLR.\par \par It also has a wide angle lens on it so it does give you more widths to your picture. What it means is that doesn\rquote t make the photos wider but if you want to get more on the scene or scenery shots that is going to be best for that. So the Compact size of a bridge camera plus the fact that it does wide angle plus the telephoto zoom lens as well are very big selling points for this particular camera model.\par \par Now, if you want to have a quick look here at the mode dial you\rquote ll see that is very similar to what you would see to a Digital SLR. You can turn it into the green auto mode which if anybody know me, knows I\rquote m not a big fan because when you use it in automatic you are just using it as a point and shoot camera. The best thing about this particular camera is that you all have the modes that you will find in a Digital SLR camera. Meaning that you can completely use it in aperture priority mode, shutter priority mode or even in fully manual mode. So therefore you will be controlling the aperture and the shutter speed of the camera. That means that this is the camera that will give you a lot of mileage out of. Also gives you lot of room to grow into your photography. So if you feel like you are not yet ready to make the commitment to a Digital SLR quite yet, this is a very nice bridge between a compact camera and a Digital SLR.\par \par We will see what else this camera have here. This also has the same pre setting modes which is really good for making fun pictures. You have here the beach mode, the food mode and all these types of scenery that they have preset for you. If you just want to use it in automatic way, you can still do that.\par \par Lets have a look at the operation on top of this camera here. On/Off is on top which is very convenient, easy to find. You can also see that it has a nice and bright LCD screen here at the back. So this nice and bright LCD screen at the back of the camera has all the information on it regarding your shutter speed, aperture value and all the modes that you are in, like flash On/Off. But one of the really nice features on this particular camera is that the screen is a very angle screen. Meaning, you can pull it out, turn it up or down. Just play around with the angle that you particularly want of the screen. This makes it really handy if you are shooting down low, or if you\rquote re doing macro work. You can see what you are shooting without really having to go down low yourself to angle the shot. It also has the electronic view finder, sometimes people don\rquote t like to use the LCD on the screen so you still have an option of using the view finder. It isn\rquote t the optical finder that you will get from the digital SLR where you are looking at a small version of what the LDC screen has down here but it\rquote s ok.\par \par What else can I tell you about this camera? Well you have lots of quick access button here on the back which you can use quickly to change things such as the flash mode, the self timer, the exposure compensation and also the video mode where you can access it by just pressing one button. The camera actually records 10idp video that is a very impressive, high quality video. It has full HD, so maybe if you want to be doing a little bit of movie as well this is a good option for you to consider. You have two way to access the powerful zoom, you can access it just right above where the shutter button is or if you prefer to use at the side of the lens here you can do that from there also. This camera is very customizable, I noticed they had a lot of buttons here that you can set to whatever feature that you want to be. For example this is the function button that if you want to make that as an ISO button you can set that as well. It also has a GPS navigation system built into it, although it is not actually a navigation system but it just means that it records the GPS data into the information of the photograph. That way if you are uploading it to flickr, facebook, all that can be pre programmed in there. So that\rquote s a kind of feature if you are into that kind of stuff. The camera also runs on a lithium ion battery which is unique compared to a lot of super zoom cameras. Some of them run on double A battery which can be convenient, but I always like to have a lithium ion battery where you can get a spare if you want to. And usually I find that a lithium ion lasts a very long time.\par \par So this is really a good camera for somebody who is kind of bored of what they can get with their compact camera. If they feel like it can\rquote t do really enough for them and they want to further experiment like change the shutter speed, aperture and using it more in a manual way but who are not fully want to make a commitment in using a digital SLR perhaps. So considering this Nikon Coolpix P510 will be a very good jumping off point. A lot of students call me and asked if this is something that they could use doing one of my courses. Definitely, although some of the course material is through lenses on a digital SLR camera but a lot of the same principles apply to a bridge camera such as this.\par \par So again it\rquote s the Nikon P510-a great camera with a 42x optical zoom which is really huge for any kind of a compact camera and I would highly recommend it. So what I\rquote ll do is post below on this video some test shots that I take with it and give you some views of the Irish countryside.\par \par If you have any questions or queries that you would like me to answer regarding cameras or what camera that you should buy then give me an email to [email protected]. I\rquote ll do my best to answer you. Please check out the blog also, www.beginnersphotographyblog.com. See you soon. Bye!\par }
